Screening tests

Hi ladies

I am currently waiting for my 12-week scan and have my first appointment with a community midwife next week. I am due to receive some information in the post shortly but would welcome your advice/experiences on screening tests or possibly diagnostic tests. I am concerned about risks associated with miscarriage related to diagnostic tests, albeit small, but assume screening tests are standard? Thank you.

Hi, I paid for private NIPT tests which you can get from 10 weeks onwards. You get a blood test and scan and they can give you pretty accurate results in the risk of downs and a few other. It’s not a available on the nhs yet but totally worth the peace of mind paying for it.x

£395 in Edinburgh. Seems like a lot of money but I’m 41 and was worried about the risks of Downs etc at my age. I didn’t want an Amnio either because of the risk of miscarriage so this was the best option for me. The scan was amazing too as she checked the baby’s brain, heart etc and it’s completely put my mind at rest. Apologies I meant to say huge congratulations too😬xx

Hi Esme78. Congratulations on your pregnancy. We opted not to have any screening tests done so just had a dating scan. I think the initial screening is a more in depth scan looking at the fluid behind baby's neck, if the result is high you will then have the option to have the more invasive test which carries a miscarriage risk. There is a test called the harmony test which is just a blood test but I think it's around £300. You might want to join the nct group there's quite a few of us on there and maybe more people will be able to answer your question. Xx

Here's the link to the NCT forum: healthunlocked.com/nct

Congrats on the pregnancy 😘

I also opted out of screening tests for my baby & am having just my 12 week dating scan today. The NCT site is great for information on pregnancy & many from this forum are on there too, plenty of support! Your midwife will be able to go through the tests more throughly & answer your questions. It’s a personal decision only you can make xozo
