Viability scan - Not sure what to feel😓

Hi Ladies, so I had my viability scan today, I'm 5+3 but as Dr is away on holiday tomorrow he asked for an early scan today. I have been really scared and expected the worst but dr then confirmed that my pregnancy started off as twins as he saw 2 sacs but only one foetal pole in one of the sacs. It was very small and he couldnt detect a heartbeat yet. He also said it wasnt too clear as my lining is very thick. He said its still slightly early but I am lagging a few days behind. He has asked for a 2nd scan in 10 days which will take me to nearly 7 weeks.

I really dont know what to think. I cried after and still feeling upset as I feel all I am doing on this journey is just scraping through, I dont pass anything with flying colours. I have been told that if theres no heartbeat next friday and growth, it will be a miscarriage.

Ladies, does anybody have positive stories where they saw a small foetal pole early on and then went on to hear a heartbeat on the 2nd scan and a healthy pregnancy? Im scared this is all over and not sure how to cope with a m/c and if I should try round 2 again. Should I be be prepared for the worst? Sorry for the long post.

Thank you x

Fingers crossed it will be all OK on the second scan hun. I'm not an expert and someone else may know, but your scan seems incredibly early! I'm not sure if much can be seen at that scan, at that stage your baby would be as small as a sesame seed.. I think most first scans are done at around 7 weeks, when they can see the heartbeat. I don't want to get your hopes up, but maybe it's just too early!!! Good luck xx

I think it’s just too early hon! The heartbeat normally starts beginning of week 6 and before then it’s all just too small to be seen properly. Viability scans tend to be no earlier than 6.5 weeks generally to be sure of seeing all the right things. Don’t read too much into it, I’m sure you will see a big difference at the next one! 💕🤞🏼

Thanks weemrsh. Thats why I wish my dr had just waited until he was back from holiday for the scan. It seems too early xx

Hi cryst4l. All I can offer you, is that all scans I was involved in were at 7 weeks for this very reason. 5 weeks is early, so just hold on to that. It will seem ages to wait, but I feel it’s the best thing to do. Thinking of you. Diane

Hi Diane, thank you for your reply. It feels ages to wait but I appreciate your feedback. I am going to try and stay positive and hold onto the fact I was scanned pretty early. Hope you are well. Xx

I’m surprised they have scanned you so early as we didn’t see a heartbeat till gone 6 weeks (I was around 6+4 I think) and that was only because I was bleeding the epu scanned me! I wasn’t due a viability scan till 7 weeks with my clinic.

I honestly wouldn’t worry yet hun I know it’s easier said than done.

Hoping these next 10 days go quick for you xx

cryst4l in reply tolianm8

Thanks for your reply hun. I just felt so deflated at the scan. I havent heard anybody say they saw a heartbeat at 5 weeks, most see it at 6 +. I can only hope that little sesame will grow and give us that flickering beat. Hope you are well xx

Yep that’s when we saw ours and only just saw it (it took the sonographer a while to find it)

I have everything crossed for you hun xx

Thanks hun. This forum is the only place I find some comfort. Hope your pregnancy is going well xx

Anything I have read and I am a complete novice - so just basically from dr google - has said hearbeat from 6 weeks +....but honestly I don't know.

I know, I said the same to my husband today. Why couldnt the dr just have waited until he got back. He knew it was early. All we do on this journey is wait wait wait for everything xx

Sounds too early but I’m sure you’ll get some more answers in 10 days time. Bet you wish you’d waited until you were 7 weeks! Love xx

cryst4l in reply toLauren0813

Hey Lauren, I so wish they had me booked me in at 7 weeks. I may not have felt so anxious and now scared for the next 10 days. I didnt even know what to expect at 5 weeks. All I got was yes theres a baby in the sac with a small fetal pole but you need another scan. I didnt even know what to look for on the screen as the scans really hurt me due to endo and I close my eyes. Xx

Awww hugs. Try and take your mind off things.. you’ve got this far!! See what happens in 10 days. They should have waited... what were they hoping to gain from this scan as they couldn’t from your dates say whether viable or not! Must be so frustrating. I keep thinking with an IVF pregnancy (or I guess any pregnancy when you have struggled) Must be a nightmare and really not that enjoyable! Hoping we’ll get that far! X

Thanks hun.hope you are feeling ok, when you starting everything? You will be ok dont worry. We are all here to support each other.its not an easy ride i wont lie, from my personal experience it has been so difficult both emotionally, physically, mentally and financially ( im still paying hundreds for meds after i got my positive test) but i pray that it will be worth it. They often say your first round is a dummy round but when you pay so much money and invest all your energy into it, you really want it to work first time. I know we should enjoy the moments but its just so hard xx

Aw thanks susi.I think im worried as dr started talking about miscarriage in the next scan and I just got so frightened.the forum advice has given me a bit of hope so im going to try and relax the 10 days. The dr kept asking me when my transfer was (hes the one that did it) he asked us 4 times and we said 30th may. I swear they get confused as they see so many patients day in day out. Youd expect a little better though as you pay thousands for private.thanks for the hugs lovey xxx

5+3 is so early for a scan. At 6 weeks sometimes it’s even too early to detect a heartbeat. We were warned that before our first scan with our first baby and that was at 6+3. Hopefully all will be well at your next scan and you’ll be able to see everything much more clearly 🤞 xx

cryst4l profile image
cryst4l in reply toTugsgirl

Thanks Vicky. Good you were warned before. I was told nothing so my expectations were not managed. I know the dr may have had his reasons for scanning early but sometimes they really do cause us unneccesary stress. Fingers crossed for next scan. Hope you are good and all ready for your wedding. Exciting xx

Please try and not worry, we had a scan at 6w 1day as I started bleeding and luckily we got to see the baby and a little heartbeat. The consultant wasn’t expecting to see one though as it’s still pretty early x crossing everything for you and that your little is growing nicely for you to see it clearly in 10 days x

cryst4l profile image
cryst4l in reply toTiffs

Thanks Tiffs. Ive heard most of you ladies having a scan at 6+ wks. Im feeling a little better and going to try and stay hopeful for next scan. We worry when we are not monitored enough and we worry when are are. Cant win lol. Xx

So true I have had 3 previous Mc and have had two scans one at 6 and one at 8. Now they have said we will see you at your 12 w scan which makes me panic! 9 weeks today and not sure I will make it another 3 weeks without booking a private scan to check all is ok!

cryst4l profile image
cryst4l in reply toTiffs

Aw bless you. I think we go for the extra scans to put our minds at rest. I totally would do the same. You just want that piece of mind. I hope your pregnancy all goes well. We really do have to fight on this journey hey xx

5.3 is too early. your doc should not have done it. i went for scan around that time caz of bleeding last year and doc saw nothing and yet subsequent scan at 7 and 8 weeks showed i was prego

cryst4l profile image
cryst4l in reply tosandra81

Hi Sandra, I think the dr only did it as he was off from today for a few wks but still no excuse. My husband thinks as im a part probably a part of his case study for lecturing he may be monitoring me a bit more closely but i dont know. I am lucky i even saw a tiny fetal pole at such an early stage xx

I'm so sorry that this scan has caused you so much stress. I agree that it's far too early. I had a scan at 6+2 last year & she took a while to find the heartbeat. My clinic refuse to do viability scans before 7 weeks.I don't think your Dr needed to be talking about miscarriages just yet. I'd be scared of course bit try to be cautiously optimistic about receiving better news at 7 weeks. Really hoping it works out well for you 😘 xx

Thanks Gracieboos.bless you. I know I was so shattered from the tears yesterday that i convinced myself it was over. I guess i was the one asking the dr oh so what happens if the next scan is no good so thats when he started talking about m/c and we spoke about trying another round and when. If I had known tjat 5 weeks ish was too early I wouldnt have got so upset. The dr was rummidging around for ages looking at the sacs etc staying quiet as he did it. When they are quiet its worrying. Hubby and I didnt even know what to look for on the screen as it was blurry due to my very thick lining. Heres to the next scan. I just have to try abd stay positive and hope for the best. Hope you are well xx

Hey dear. Don't worry. Stress is not good for your and babies health. Try to stay positive. Don't be hopeless. I know everything is going to be okay. We all are here for you. So no need for panicking. Usually, at 7 weeks you can hear the heartbeat so no worries. Fingers crossed for you. Wait for the doctor to return. Hope everything will go well. Fingers crossed for you. All the best. Will be waiting to hear good news.

Pregnancy is high time. It is stepping on the road of the parenthood. Every single moment counts. From the first day till the end there are some surprises for both the parents. They are willing to do anything for the sake of the rainbow. It is a tough time for you. You have a blessing inside. The situation is not clear for you. In the previous scans, the fetal poles were too small. The viability test is being conducted to make the things clear. This will help the doctors take proper action. It is a kind of ultrasound test. Mostly it is performed from 6 to 10 weeks of pregnancy. It has dual objectives. It is used to find the number of embryos in the uterus. Secondly, it is further used to determine the health of the embryo in the body of the mother. If the doctors are not confirmed about how the baby is doing, they perform the viability test. In your case, they have doubts about the existence of the baby. Therefore, they are going for the viability scan. This will give a clear picture of the development of the baby in your womb. I pray that the things turn out to be the way you want. There are complications but keep your faith. Destiny will give you the best in the coming days.

I think it’s just too early. Don't overthink. All will be fine. The heartbeat normally starts the beginning of week 6 and before then it’s all just too small to be seen properly. Stay positive and happy. Think positive all will be fine sweetheart. My best wishes are with you. All the very best. I pray and hope that after 10 days you find positive news. Take care of yourself. Don't be upset. Hope so you are blessed with beautiful angels. Lots of love.

I had some bleeding at 5 weeks just a few weeks ago and my clinic said it was too early for a scan as they wouldn't see much so done blood tests and were going to check my hcg levels on the first blood test my hcg levels were pretty high so they got me in for a scan think I was around 5 weeks 6 days, they could just see the foetal pole but no heart beat, I went in a week later for a scan and the heartbeat was there to see and they let us hear it as well, the different in growth in a week was massive! Sending you lots of positive thoughts, hope your next scan goes well 😘 Xx

Hey. Don't lose hope. Everything will be alright. I can understand your situation because I have lost my baby. I had some uterine complications due to which I was left infertile. I thought I would not be able to have a baby in my life. I was so disappointed. Then, I came to know about Surrogacy. Now I am a happy mother. Surrogacy is a blessing indeed. I hope things go right in your way. Stay blessed.
