Hi there, I'm just looking for some options. I've been told to start taking 75mg of DHEA daily to start my fertility process. The sign effects on the bottle sound pretty scary. Has anyone taken these supplements and if so what side effects did you have?
Hi amanda0304, after my first ivf cycle ended in early miscarriage with my first pregnancy in September, I read a book called "It Starts with the Egg" by Rebecca Fett which recommended DHEA amongst other supplements to improve diminished ovarian reserve.
I've therefore been taking it since October which i ordered from an American company called McPherson's Lab as I could not source the Micronized, pharmaceutical grade from a UK seller.
Initially, I had some ovarian twinges but that may have been my ovaries returning to normal and I've had no abnormal symptoms since.
As the hospital had not prescribed DHEA to me, but have since told me they do not object, I've not had my testosterone/progesterone levels monitored nor had any scans to assess any affects from the DHEA, both of which are recommended.
I'm just hoping that when we go for round 2 of IVF in January that the DHEA and other lifestyle changes I've made will have improved my egg quality and quantity.
Come to think of it, my hair was in bad condition and falling out after ivf and when I started DHEA. I had an Indian Head massage, a good cut and switched to organic, chemical free hair products and my hair has been healthier since.
I have notice some minor chin hair increase - no z z top by any means - in my opinion though, a couple of pluckable hairs are a small price to pay for a potential baby!
I have felt very irritable, weepy and anxious during the last few weeks too but ive been on DHEA for 3 months and have only really felt that way recently which I equate to the looming IVF, major work upheaval and other big life stressors all coming together and making me hit my limit.
Hey I am the same as Pookymama and been taking since October and due to start 2nd cycle in January. I have low amh. I went to go to ask for blood tests to check testosterone etc and they couldn't have been more unhelpful so I just hope it works. Am off to get amh checked privately in new year so fingers crossed. I am not sure if my tablets are micronised or not as I got them from biovea. I haven't noticed any side effects but maybe my husband would say I have been angry..lol xxx
Hi Amanda0304. Regarding treatment with Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) it is still in its early days. Women with reduced ovarian reserve have been given 75 mgs of this drug a day, in divided doses of 25 mgs 3 times a day for around 2 months, been found to respond better to stimulation during IVF. Some consultants will offer treatment with DHEA. You would need to ask and discuss this thoroughly with your consultant to see if he/she agrees with it and also regarding the potential side effects, which are similar to using steroids.
A 41 yr old lady I spoke with recently who has had treatment with DHEA after several failed attempts at IVF/ICSI and she has just had 8 eggs retrieved after apparently only ever managing 2-3 per cycle. She used it for 2 months. Hope this helps a little.
Meanwhile, I do wish you well with whatever you decide. Diane
I took it. Had good results, it did make me a bit more irritable than usual. I didn't notice much hair loss. I did get acne though! That sucked as I don't like makeup!
