Nausea

Hello there :) I am currently 8 weeks 2 days and have been struggling with nausea since week 5. It is getting worse and mine usually is worse after 3 pm till I sleep. It is now starting earlier the day and I am trying to eat small and regular snacks which do help it a bit. Any tips on how to improve nausea? I am finding that fruits, cold smoothies, milk help. I cannot tolerate strong odour such as onions, raw meat being cooked ( any meat), strong perfumes etc and I am staying away from these. Also when did the nausea improve? I know it varies from person to person and I know some people remain till the end but I am hoping it wont remain to this degree hehe.

Thank you for hearing me out and good luck on your journey ❤️🙏

Hi! I had bad nausea from week 8 until about week 14 in the early evenings through to bed time, though it did start easing off after week 12. I couldn't smell or eat any fish or meat. What helped me were anti-nausea wrist bands , as well as lying down and closing my eyes. I have heard ginger is supposed to help too though I couldn't have it due to a hematoma. Good luck, I hope you feel better soon!

I didnt know ginger cannot be taken when you have a haematoma. Whats the reason behind it? Ginger is helping but no miracles 🤣

I don't know, just the advice I got from my midwife. Hang in there!

So variable between different people and different babies. My first it lasted 20 long weeks, my second it was 14. I found the only thing that helped was eating little and often.

I had nausea throughout 1st trim and then like a light bulb, it stopped at 12 weeks. I found ginger tea helped me massively. It’s really horrible so I feel for you, sometimes I thought it might be easier just to be sick but I never was. Hope you feel better soon xxx

The nausea really is the worst. It was 24/7 to 25w with my first but it was actually tolerable as mild to moderate. This time around (11.5w atm) it gets worse as the day goes on and it’s debilitating. I’m on meds from the doc and they don’t do much. Anyway, things that helped first time around were Fever Tree ginger beer, plain soda water, home made extra gingery biscuits (kept in the freezer in big batches), and mini salted pretzels (the dry crackery type, brilliant if you wake up at night with nausea). This time around little helps the nausea except trying to prevent it in the first place by trying to eat every hour and never letting myself get hungry. Dinner has to be by 5.30pm or things nosedive rapidly. I have 2 small lunches at 11am and 1pm. Salted popcorn has been a help, and bananas strangely. I have struggled to get in my vegetables as I’m living on toast and ham sandwiches during the day but have found store-bought gazpacho a good compromise and have little sips throughout the day. V8 would work also.

It’s a miserable miserable time, all you can do is grit your teeth, cry when you need to, and reach our to your GP if things get too much-mine signed me off for 2w as he was worried the nausea coupled with work stress was brewing antenatal depression. The nausea was easier to deal with with work out of the equation. And remember it will pass (this is a mantra for dealing with a baby also!). Hope you feel better soon xx

Relentless nausea is so miserable! I found sucking on ice cubes or ice chips was the only thing that helped. The thought of any liquid turned my stomach so it was also a good way of staying hydrated for me.

Don’t be afraid to contact your GP for medication if you need to, there are several types and they’re safe during pregnancy. For my friend meds stopped the nausea completely, for me they just reduced the number of times I’d be sick but the nausea remained. Worth a shot though!

With my son the nausea stopped around 20 weeks. This time I’m almost 34 weeks and still being sick multiple times everyday, despite being on drugs to stop it and it’s beginning to effect my mental health, but I think usually it improves a lot at 12-14 ish weeks so I really hope you feel better soon xx

I feel your pain - mine kicked in around 5/6 weeks and was bad albeit on and off right the way through until early in the third trimester. Then one day it just lifted and I felt invincible! Nothing really worked for me sadly and I bought every ginger product going. Dry toast, beige foods, weirdly milk and things like ice cream and yoghurt were ok, but couldn't even have meat cooked near me let alone eat it. I pretty much lived on twiglets and I figured as they're packed with b vits they were actually a health food :) If it gets really bad hopefully your GP can prescribe something but I think the main thing is to try and stay hydrated and eat little and often if you can.

I was only able to eat beige freezer food for the first trimester. I was worried baby wasn't getting all the nutrients they needed but midwife reassured me that as long as I was eating I could be healthy when I felt better. Really helped me to stop feeling guilty and just eat what I could. My husband also had to dp all the cooking and I ate in bed for the first 14 weeks
