Chance of gender scan being wrong

We had our 20 week scan a couple of weeks ago and were told it's a girl. I know of someone who was told at 20 weeks they were having a girl and then during a growth scan it was confirmed as a boy.

How likely is it that the sonographer got it right? Baby wasn't showing between its legs so she said it's likely to be a girl as she couldn't see any boy bits! Could see 3 lines in that area which I've been told mean a girl but don't want to go shopping if we're not sure.

I really don't care if baby is a girl or boy, it would just be exciting to know and for me and my husband to call baby by their name

I don’t know how common mistakes are, but they do happen - especially a boy mistaken for a girl…. If they see the boy bits then it’s rare to be wrong, but if they just don’t see anything there’s always a small chance it was just the angle 🙃 I don’t think it’s likely , but it is possible x

I think unless you can see definitively, be cautious. But if it helps, boy bits in my very limited experience of this pregnancy are quite visible!

I’m very impressed you have picked a name! We are finding that bit very hard!

Yes, we've got a 13 month old LB and it was very obvious on the scans 😂 we chose the middle name first as its family related and then found a name we liked to go with it

Hi there, it’s a tricky one. A sonographer can only give their opinion at a particular point in time during a scan and babies can hide things or umbilical cords can look like boy bits. It’s unfortunately not always easy to see. You will never get an 100% answer from a scan just an indication. You could have a private gender scan to see if they agree and baby might be in a better position. Wishing you all the best going forward.

Thank you. Was thinking about a private scan, just not sure if we can justify it. With my LB we had extra scans so thinking we'll wait and see if we get extra scans this time

I didn't even consider this 🤔 Maybe buy some neutral bits and bobs to get you going!
