worried about Anti D!!

Hey everyone, I’m 20 weeks pregnant and been told I’ll need Anti D at 28 weeks. I cut my finger tonight whilst slicing vegetables and did the silly thing of sucking my finger, and I’m just wondering if I need to contact the out of hours midwives to get my Anti D early. I know this probably sounds absolutely ridiculous, but when my community midwife told me I needed this injection, she wasn’t too clear on the circumstances with regards having it before the 28 week point. Feel really silly asking this question!!

Thanks in advance ☺️☺️

Hello monkee641, I am also RH negative and would like to reassure you that sucking your own blood does not pose any risk to the baby. The issue with carrying a RH positive baby for anyone who's RH negative is that in case your baby's blood mixes with yours during pregnancy or birth (e.g. via a bleed from the placenta) then your body is likely to produce antibodies in order to destroy baby's blood cells. Anti-D will prevent this. You will need to be mindful of any events where you might have hurt your bump as that could injure the placenta.

I found these articles really helpful:

nhs.uk/conditions/rhesus-di...

I was given an Anti-D injection with my first pregnancy at 28 weeks and after delivery and also had it during surgical management of my miscarriages as the likelihood is high in these events that your baby's blood could enter your blood stream via the placenta. In future pregnancies you will always be tested during the booking appointment with the midwife whether you have antibodies in your bloodstream so they can monitor your baby more closely if needed. Wishing you all the best for your pregnancy! X

Thank you so much! I knew I was being silly but I was definitely overthinking things, so thought it best to ask. This is our first baby and is a little IVF miracle, so we’re very cautious x x

Not being silly at all, I felt exactly the same in my first pregnancy, it's always better to double-check when in doubt, that's what we're all here for. I totally understand your feeling anxious, your little miracle really is the most precious thing, wishing you a very happy and uneventful pregnancy! xx

I had my Anti D injection yesterday. It wasn't too bad. She said I might get an achey arm but it has been fine. If you have Badger Notes there might be leaflets there explaining things. Just thinking that might be nice if the modwifes didn't tell you much!

the anti D is fine I had 3 during pregnancy for spotting/bleeding and as above it’s only if it could cross to the baby xx
