20 week scan - anyone else had a slightly large stomach?

Hi all Wanted to share good news after a bit of a worry over the weekend as usual pre scan nerves.

So 20 +5 today and had our anomaly scan. Baby was amazing and developed so much since the 12 week one. All curled up and seeing the feet and hands 🥰 Even got a cute wave!

Couldn't quite see everything so another one in 2 weeks but stomach was measuring 22+2. Think this showed as the 99 percentile. Said not to worry but anyone else had this? Head and all other organs were spot on date wise.

Also weirdly this afternoon had some really sharp stabbing pains in my lower right abdominal. Enough to make me jump and not felt these so far in the pregnancy. Had about 4/5 in a 15 period and then another couple an hour later. I'm just sitting and working from.home so not moving or stressed. Have others had these too?

Thanks all and hope others scans have gone well too xx

Hi,Congratulations 👶🏼🥰

We're currently 23w3ds and we had our anatomy scan at 19w5ds and our baby was weighing in at 466g which you would normally expect around where we are now, along with their head and legs coming in at 22ws. My doctor asked where our baby gets its size from as both my partner and I are fairly small. I was a big baby for a girl, at the top of the girls scale in length and also had a big head and feet 😂🙆🏼‍♀️.. We all blame my Mother's Dad as he is the only person who is of a bigger build in our family.

I think it all comes down to genetics in the end, don't worry I'm sure everything else will catch up! ☺️🤗

As for the pains... Yes!!!.. And as a first timer I am afraid I also don't have the answer but I would also love to know. I assumed it maybe the baby having a good jab around as we are currently breech, feet to the left and arms to the right. ☺️🤗

Thank you so much for replying and congrats on being 23w! Funny they didn't mention weight or femur at all but just had a look through the docs and we're also on the big side for weight and femur. My husband is 6ft 4 and broad so that makes sence! 😃 Makes me feel a little better as was thinking if everything else was little apart from stomach...! They do have a while still to catch up so agree sure will balance out 😊

It's hard to know being my first baby what's normal and what's not so very helpful to just check in with others and sorry you get stabbing pains too but maybe was just the baby getting me back for disturbing their sleep at the scan earlier today!

Good luck for a smooth rest of pregnancy xx

First of all big congratulations. Although I don’t know if this is the case for you I had a similar issue. The baby’s head and femur were fine on the anomaly scans (20 week scan done in two parts due to his position) but the stomach was on the big side (2 weeks ahead). He was also around the 90th percentile. I was tested for gestational diabetes at week 24 and I was diagnosed as having this which explained why the baby’s stomach was bigger than it should be. I managed to control this through diet and was monitored carefully through the pregnancy (lots of scans). Anyway he was born via a planned c-section last Tuesday and only weighed 6lbs and 6oz so not on the big side as feared. He is healthy and his blood sugar levels were tested after his first two feeds and they were fine. I’m not saying you might have this but if you haven’t been tested and are concerned re: causes it might be worth exploring this with your midwife. If you are a gestational diabetic your care will be consultant led. I am not able to comment on the stabbing pains though as I didn’t have them. I wish you all the best with your pregnancy.

Hey, thanks for your message and huge congratulations! Sounds like he was perfectly healthy and wonderful and hope the forst few weeks have been good. Ah, okay that makes sence. I've got a GD test begining of March as on the risk level for that due to age and other health bits - plus am already consultant led as we used donor eggs so that sounds quite possible as the reason. I am terrible with sweets - have a pretty healthy diet and active except for those sneaky haribo. Although am gluten intolerant I found in the last couple of years so changed my diet quite a bit. I'll chat with my midwife and that's really reassured me. Thank you and enjoy those days with your new baby 😊 xx

I was told the exact same on my 20 week scan. They said her tummy is in the 98th percentile but is nothing to worry about. We are all different shapes and sizes. I’m chunky and so is my partner so I can just say she takes after us haha

Hi there, it’s very common for the tummy measurement to measure large at 20 weeks. Shows baby is growing well. Hardly any babies match their dates exactly on the 20 week scan so nothing to worry about there.

I would mention the pain in Your side to your midwife. I had similar pain that turned out to be nothing - likely the muscles stretching but not to be ignored. Midwife will be best to advise you. All the best going forward.x
