12 week screening results back

Magic_waiting2happen profile image

Hi guys! We had our 12 week scan at the weekend and it was the most amazing thing! I actually started to lean into this pregnancy a bit more and we had plans to start telling people. I then get the call yesterday that from our screening we have a 1/90 chance of Down’s syndrome. It was like my whole world fell in - we worked out the stats that’s a 1.11% chance or a 98.9% everything being ok. I know the odds are in our favour but it’s like another hurdle and another waiting game. We have gone with another blood test NIPT which should be more accurate but have to wait 10-14 days. How do we manage this wait without all the worry again?!!

Hi Magic, on my last pregnancy I got a 1/150 result back from the 12 week bloods. But when I had the more accurate NIPT the results came back as low risk. When I looked it up online ladies who have had ivf have a bigger chance of incorrect results from those 12 week bloods because of higher levels of papp-a in our blood streams, if I remember rightly. Hopefully your NIPT comes back quickly, I think mine took about a week xxx

Hello lovely, something similar happened to me. I was 37 and we got a 1/102 result back (very low PAPP-A level result combined with an unusual level of bHCG) and then we decided to do the NIPT test. I won't lie, the wait was very hard but it took less than expected to get the results. I think it took about 5 working days to get the results and they came back as low risk. I hope your NIPT comes back quickly xxx

Thank you for replying! It’s just seems we are constantly waiting for something or another! I only know what the results were - hoping it maybe a bit sooner then! I’m not sure as it’s a donor egg whether that affects the readings at all?! X

Thank you for replying! 😊 Yes I was wondering whether donor egg and ivf would affect it at all? It’s just so scary isn’t it?! Xx

I am not sure about donor eggs (this was our last attempt with my OE) but I was told by the consultant that IVF can affect the PAPP-A level result. I will be thinking of you xx

We had a background result which seemed to be mainly based on my age - and even though the odds were good in a sense, it wasn't very comforting. When the blood test results came back it was adjusted and changed massively, to low risk. I would have thought they'd base the background result on age of donor but maybe it's not that intuitive and you need to wait on the bloods to get the more accurate reading. I think after that and if the bloods come back higher risk, there are further tests. It's all nerve-wracking but hopefully it will be ok.

Hi! In my case, my previous baby had foetal anomalies so this time we did the NIPT test privately at 10 weeks. My understanding is that they analyse the baby’s DNA in the mom’s blood, hence why it is more accurate. So I don’t think it would matter if it is donor eggs. In the previous occasion, when I had done the combined blood test at 12 weeks, I was told that results could also appear high as maternal age is one of the factors in the calculation and I was over 35. So this time I wanted to know sooner and avoid getting worried unnecessarily. When I went for the 12 week scan, they asked me if I wanted the screening tests (combined blood test + measuring of nuchal translucency) but when I told them I had the NIPT already, they said that test superseded these ones as they were less precise so they weren’t necessary. I hope it helps and that everything looks reassuring with your NIPT results.

They often say 2 weeks but in reality it only takes a few days. X

Sorry I don’t have experience with this but just want to add my voice in support. reading all the comments above - sounds quite reassuring so hopefully all will be fine 🤞🏽🤞🏽. The wait sounds super stressful though so I am wishing you luck💕 we are here if you need support

Thank you Bozo_the_pumpkin had a bit of an emotional break down as our parents are just acting like it’s bad news already - we know they just care but the constant messages and flowers are too much and it’s causing my anxiety to rocket! I have told them today to back off a bit and stop acting like it’s confirmed already!! Xx

Congrats on your healthy pregnancy. Please do not be too scared of Downs syndrome. I would urge you to look into what it is actually like to live with Downs these days, and to watch videos of adults and children living with Downs. There are all kinds of therapies now that we did not have or know about in the past, to help people with this syndrome live more "normal" and easier lives. I promise you that if your baby is born with Downs (and it doesn't sound like it is likely) you will not love him or her any less, and they have just as much of a chance at a happy life. There is so much prejudice around this condition, and while there are certainly challenges, it does not have to be a curse. xoxo
