NASH with F2 fibrosis. Trying to lose weight and eat a liver friendly diet.

This is what I'm now doing:

Eating 2000 or below calories per day.

Every day I make sure I get: 800IU Vit E supplement, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1L of water with squeezed lemon, 2 cups of green tea, 2 cups of coffee, 1 tin of tuna, some walnuts, weetabix or porridge, and 5 servings of fruit or veg.

Evening Meals:

Mon: Cod Loins with Veg

Tues: Pork Loins with veg

Weds: Chicken Breast and wholegrain rice

Thurs: Chicken Stir fry

Fri: Turkey with new potatoes

Sat: A cheat day, AKA a meal out.

Sun: Tuna jacket potato

Anything I'm doing wrong, or anything I could do better?

Thanks so much!

Are you taking vitamin E instructed by a doctor or by yourself? I was told E can be toxic it is not soluble and your body doesn't rid itself. I was directed to take it for 3 months then a multiple vitamin daily after, it has a small amount of E. Other than that I think you are doing well. I use the rule of thumb, don't eat anything white. I have also read don't eat anything that grows underground but I do have an occasional red, yellow or sweet potato and love carrots. Roasted vegies with olive oil and spice are good. Good luck!

Hi Deb, thanks.

My hepatologist advised there are studies showing 800IU of vitamin E a day can reduce inflammation. I have also read these studies and none seem to mention toxicity? All of them are long term studies, AKA over 1-2 years. So I got myself some from the store and have been taking one 400IU capsule in the morning with breakfast and one in the evening with dinner.

This is the conclusion from one of the studies:

"Patients were give 800 mg of vitamin E daily for 24 weeks. Before treatment began patients' livers were evaluated biochemically and histologically. These evaluations were repeated after treatment ended. At the end of the 24 weeks, statistically significant decreases of AST, ALT and steatosis were found, but no histological changes were found in the level of inflammation and fibrosis. No patient experienced adverse effects at this dosage of vitamin E. Although there is currently no effective drug therapy for patients with NASH, the evidence shown by the PIVENS study suggests that proper administration of vitamin E improves liver histology in adult non-cirrhotic patients with NASH who do not have diabetes."

Is it working for you? You don't mention salt which is key. Seems like you are being thoughtful about it. I always wonder about the concept of a "cheat" day. It is easy to undo much of your gains depending on how you cheat. What I find odd is that people intentionally work against themselves and go overboard when they cheat. At your stage I don't object to a little indulgence but the operative word is little, but we all have to find what can work for us. Here is a link to our general advice.

Thank you!

When you say salt? Do you mean added salt? I don't add salt to any of my meals or recipes, I focus on herbs as a replacement.

When I say cheat day, I'm not saying I pig out, I more mean I go out for dinner with friends or family, have a meal in a restaurant and a couple of drinks, so nothing too drastic (I hope).

A lot of salt is added to things people don't think about so unless it is fresh always check the label. The same thing applies to sugar. Socializing is a good thing just be aware of what you are ordering. Think of it this way, imagine your liver is a jogger. Six days a week not problem then one day it is asked to run hundred yard dash. Can it do it without causing damage?

Who recommended this diet? And are you trying to lose weight? I need to gain weight!!!

This is largely the recommended diet for NASH. Most NASH patients are overweight so need to lose weight. In your case, you may want to press your doctor more on why you actually have NASH? It would seem odd for someone underweight to have it without another underlying cause.
