Today was good day. I had follow ups with both my endocrinologist and my hepatologist. On the Type 2 diabetes side, I've dropped my a1C from 6.5 to 5.5 in the past 12 months (which is now controlled in the normal level). Last year, my CAP was 321 (S3) and my kPa was 8.8 (mid-F2). Today, the CAP came in at 210 (below S1) and the KpA at 5.1(S0-S1). How? Diet, exercise, stress reduction. Be strict. Follow the guidelines. Be mindful. This step is just step one. It continues a daily battle, and I recognize it can return just as quickly as it was pushed down if I become lax and lazy. Have hope, my friends. Fight to win every day. Today is the only day you can control. Blessings.

Congratulations! That's great news. I wonder if you could share a little about your diet? Did you follow a modified Mediterranean diet, or something different?
Thanks! Pretty much. I track everything I eat. Healthy fats (40%), Proteins (40% - 95% chicken and fish), 20% carbs. Sodium 1,500 mg a day. Olive oil. Yogurt. Walnuts. Almonds. Coffee (black, drip only), Green Tea, Water (and the occasional diet soda). Fruits (frozen strawberries, blackberries, cherries, and raspberries), Fuji apples. I rarely eat full "meals," preferring to graze all day with 5-6 smaller events. Keeps the metabolism humming and limits digestive stress. Also strive to take in 30mg of fiber daily.
Can I ask something? You wrote somewhere "I am fortunate in that I carry only one of two Alpha 1 genes". So are you only a carrier? Is your liver impacted? Sorry for asking.
No worries. Yes, I am a carrier of a mutated Alpha-1 gene. Generally, carriers have lower levels of the alpha-1 but not to the level that it impacts lung function. Your lungs remain protected. I've not encountered any evidence carrier status impacts liver function (and certainly not more than NASH). My hepatologist has not indicated any concerns regarding my carrier status.
Perfect timing for this great news. I go for a fibroscan in the morning. I learned today that I am no longer in need of Metformin and diabetes is in full remission (the doctor actually said I no longer am diabetic.) Thanks for sharing this inspiring news and congratulations!
Thanks for sharing hope.I’m currently stuck in shock…
I’ve been concerned for almost 5 years, because of upper right quadrant pain. I found this site about 4 years ago, and adapted to a healthier diet. I lost weight simply getting rid of salad dressings and replacing it with olive oil and herbs.
My fibroscan was CAP 277 and kPa 4.6 July 2019.
Not one doctor would review my fibroscan with me because I have no other Conditions but obesity and RA and normal labs.
I was accepted into a study last week for an injectable for NASH. I’m trying to process my fibroscan results… CAP 400 and kPa 14.2.
Sad really… But I feel so blessed to be in clinical hands and finally receiving a liver biopsy and proper treatment and testing. I’m so upset with the perception of my current physicians. I suffered a G.I. bleed in 2017, the turmeric supplement was blamed, and my chart is littered with psychological BS. I now have Barrett’s esophagus because of the very weak LES. I hate to be that complicated case, but if doctors would listen to me, I could point them in the right direction. I have excessive amounts of bile & no gallbladder. Let’s look again at my liver, despite my liver numbers & me not being yellow or itchy!
That is so wonderful to hear, congrats! Almost 2 years ago during an ultrasound for bowel the report indicated fatty liver. My doctor also indicated this but no one expressed concern or suggested how bad it could get. My 3 month labs for enzymes always came back in normal range, nothing said. I am pre-diabetic no meds, A1C was a little higher than liked, Doctor did say try to watch my diet later in game. Flash forward had another ultrasound several months ago. Result being diffusely echogenic enlarged 24.5 cm no focal abnormaties. Referred to gastro he ordered Fibrotest and I was dumbstruck from results, F3 Advanced Fibrosis. Nashtest N3 severe nash and Steatotest S2S3 moderate/severe steatosis. Again enzymes in normal range but AST 53 range of 10-40. Will note A1C went from 7.2 to 6.4, tryglicerides still high but lower than last test and cholesterol normal range. I had already lost 16 pounds by trying but since have buckled down more. Next appointment with gastro is not until 2-10 where I expect him to schedule a fibroscan as he had said prior then depending on that result biopsy. I was shocked, never in my life would I have thought my liver would have problems, doesn't run in my family. Now I feel I'm at deaths door at 69. I have spent last 2 days reading with not many feel good stories out there. My question is how accurate is the fibrotest and has a firoscan ever shown it to be incorrect. Sorry for such a long rant, thank you for any info. Deb in 🇺🇸
