Hi everybody! The dietary recommendation here reads: EAT a lot of fruit and vegetables but watch for salt.
But some of the post here warn against eating too much of fruit. So I’m still trying to figure it out. Now I eat daily: 1 big apple, 1 orange and 1 banana. Is that still too much? Should I cut on it too? I used to eat much more fruit before.

The science suggests lower GI is better for a lot of people. A general practitioner in the UK by the name of Dr David Unwin has had a lot of real world success at reversing type 2 diabetes with a low carb diet, and NAFLD is related to T2D and metabolic syndrome in many.
Dr Unwin has created easy to follow tables, which show a variety of foods in terms of spoons of sugar. I find this an easier way to compare foods than GI numbers.
NB, he isn't making any money out if his research, just improving NHS patient's lives, which for me makes all the difference when trying to find usable advice.
Wow! Thanks for the link. It’s very interesting. I especially liked the information that about 5-6% of NAFDL patients develop futher liver problems like steatosis or fibrosis. It seems quite low number to me.
I follow the Mediterranean diet Whitehall recommends 3/5 servings of fruit per day. You can avoid fruits higher in natural sugars if it’s a concern. I’m very careful with Grapes and oranges as they are my favorites but also very high in sugars
Yes! I love oranges! I used to eat kilos of them. Now I’m on one per day because I think they are good for you if not consumed to excess. Thanks and fingers crossed for us all fighting the NAFDL😉
its my impression that the sugar you get from eating fruits in the raw is not "bad" for a person. Its the added sugars in things(like baked goods & soda-pop for example) that are the problematic ones. I think you would have to eat a lot of fruit to have a negative overall effect. I generally have about 1.5 c frozen berries a day in a smoothie, along with a banana or apple, or whatever fruit is handy to grab. Lots of veg at dinner time. You gotta do what works for you though, and my opinion is exactly that - an opinion for something that works for me.
I agree with FoodIsLife. With fruit, its best to be boring and predictable. What i mean is that i typically have the same thing every day. Half a banana w/ berries in a smoothie for lunch and a bowl full of blueberries for evening snack. That's it. You really don't need more than that. Maybe i'll sneak in an apple or pear here and there. Mostly i load up on veggies and whole grains. I typically go full plant based at least 5x per week. The other 2 days i will have fish or chicken. Beans is a staple. Lentils is a staple. Avocados. Eggplant. Mushrooms. Loads of leafy greens. Cruciferous veggies. I'll do a sweet potato once or twice per week. Unsweetened almond butter is another good option for added protein.
Thank you! Your info and support is perfect! I’ll make lentils and beens a staple. But generally I follow the same diet as you. I have blood tests after Easter and I’m having my ferritin levels checked too. Curious about the results.
