Fatty Liver pain that doesn't go away

Is it supposed to be a continuous thing? It's throbbing pain, seems like in fire, but it doesn't go away. I would only have few minutes of break then it's gonna come back. Is this how it's supposed to be? It doesn't seem to end. You think I'm misdiagnosed or way worse or ate/drank something?

A liver biopsy doesn’t lie ..... go to liver specialist and also get a complete physical ..... of your organs....go to your primary care doctor. God is good.....

Sorry, forget to mention the tests I got so far. I only had Ultrasound and Lab tests. I'm planning to seek another opinion and perhaps a biopsy.

My doctor did an Ultrasound and said I had fatty liver and acted like it was not a big deal. I insisted on a fibroscan. I found out I had a high amount of fat on my liver which was 386 with the top being 400. I have pain constantly, as well, but on the left side. You should just ask for a referral to a hepatologist. Your general doctor will give it to you. Good luck and I hope that your pain subsides.

Hi Ree

My pain is always on the left side not the right. My oncologist says the pain can radiate to the left. I also have severe ibs which can also cause pain.

Thank you for letting me know. My doctor keeps telling me he doesn't know what it is. Going back for more blood work this week. My RBC seems to be getting higher. I hope you are feeling better.

Hi Super

Generally pain from fatty liver disease doesn't come on suddenly or with great intensity. It could be something else entirely. I can't advise you but sudden intense pain that persists may need attention. Self diagnosing it as liver pain can be dangerous in the case of a bowel blockage as just one example.

I only had ultrasound and blood tests. Perhaps I need to see another specialist. I read some posts here saying that there are cases where misdiagnosis happens. My anxiety is through the roof as Im worried of misdiagnosis. I guess being sure and asking for another opinion won't hurt me. Your response is enlightening. Thank you, sir!

Misdiagnosis is common unfortunately. Ultrasound and blood are not adequate to diagnose liver disease. The best they do is suggest that further testing is warranted. Since your doc has pointed you in the direction of liver disease your best bet is a hepatologist or a gastro doc with a liver specialty. Primary care docs are inadequately trained for diagnosing liver disease generally.

Don't be anxious. My dad was an alcoholic and his fatty liver didn't cause his death at age 78. Stop the Tylenol, eat your greens!

Or, gallbladder

Yay! Got my new tests today and one of them says that I have a gallbladder polyp.

Schnappy profile image

so, what does that mean? Instead of liver disease? My gallbladder is barely functioning but I don't have polyps so my doc and I have decided to leave it in place unless the pain starts.

There are many gastrointestinal conditions that are misdiagnosed. Many of them are overlooked in favor of liver disease. My PCP was admittedly unqualified to diagnose my condition and referred me to a GI. The pain I experienced apparently is similar to that which you are experiencing. It is often referred to as epigastric pain and is often centered in an area of the liver known as the hepatic hilam. The pain I experienced was from obstruction of bile and billiruben that decends from the liver through the common bile duct to the pancreatic duct. Excretion of hepatic and pancreatic enzymes is controlled by the sphincter of Oddi. When there is a dysfunction of the sphincter of Oddi, pappillary stenosis can be the result. This stenosis causes a feeling of billiary hypertension that may be causing the pain you are experiencing.

The many articles I have researched in the medical literature (pubmed.gov) gave me the clues I needed to resolve my condition without medical intervention. The changes include exclusion of certain foods from the diet, eating organic low sugar/carbohydrates and saturated fats (ketogenic diet), exercise, adequate sleep, elimination or reduction of toxins in your environment (pesticides, household chemicals), GMO foods known to be unhealthy (high-fructose corn syrup, unfermented soy protein, among others). So the treatment for you condition requires you to be informed and fully engaged in your treatment. It is imperative that you self educate so that you can better collaborate with the physicians with whom you may confer.

FYI, I expended well over 500 hours of my time researching the medical literature to discover the cure for my condition. Be prepared to learn hundreds of new medical terms.

In conclusion, I am pleased to report that my recovery is well under way. I firmly believe anyone can beat liver disease if they are willing to diligently research the medical literature and act upon the information you discover.

I never had a issue with pain, but it is a good idea to see a Gastro Doctor to see what else might be going on.

I have very similar pain as you've described. HOWEVER, if I have one more doctor palpate my liver and tell me that the liver has no pain receptors I think I am going to explode. I DO understand that perhaps the liver itself would not, but Glisson's capsule (surrounding it) DOES have pain receptors. When I ask about it, I get patted on the head and they treat me like I'm there for drugs only. I don't DO any pain medications whatsoever! Unfortunately I get frustrated because no on will actually listen without making some sort of assumption or give me the deer in the headlight looks and announce "see you in 3 months, we will keep an eye on it". Aaargh -- so frustrating!

I think it's the weight of the actual fatty liver putting pressure on surrounding tissues that causes the pain.

I feel you. Being a proactive patient, sometimes they see us as aggressive patients! They don't take us seriously.

I take a Chinese herb that takes the pain away for me. It's called Schisandra. I get it on Amazon.

Hello! Just an update.

Took another set of blood and urine tests. Most results are normal, some are not. I asked my ultrasound exam. It still says that I have fatty liver but now, it also says that I have a gallbladder polyp. Found out that the pain is similar to fatty liver pain, and in the same location.

Im grateful with your responses. It truly encouraged me to be proactive. I am asked to take multiple herbal medicines but I think I will just eat right.

Thank you again!

Hi Superkates, great you're being proactive. I have constant pain in my back - left upper quadrant which actually aches when I breathe in now. Diagnosed with fatty liver but I don’t get any pain under my rib cage. My mum passed in Jan so I have been less vigilant with my diet until recently. How is your pain now - what will they do with your polyp? This pain really gets you down doesn’t it?

Hi Super, I also have a Non- Alcohol Fatty Liver I was diagnosed in July 2019 with 30% fat & 5% Cirrhosis in my liver. I did many blood test, UltraSound, and when I took the Fiborscan that's when I got the Diagnosis. As other people on this site have mention to you please go see a Hepatologist Doctor. Mine is excellent I did the research he told me to diet but I was already doing that when I went to him so he told me to continue. He just didn't help with the diet, which I have Trainer & I do weights 3 days a week, water cardio for my knee (4 days) and walk 10K plus steps daily, walking or elliptical. I have bad knees, so I do some type of machine at least 2 or 3 days along with everything else I am doing. I have lost 24 pounds on my own its been 13 months but I am still on my Life Style Program. I eat as clean as possible 5-6days per week. Of course it has not been easy and I have tried losing weight off and on for 2 years but when I received the results I am totally determined to lose the weight I have 25 more pounds to go. NALD came from eating Junk food and taking Tylenol and Omeprazole 40mg twice daily 2 years for IBS. When I had my Colonoscopy in May 2019 this same Doctor lowered it to 20 Mg once daily. My Gastro Doctor at the time put me on it I also have diverticulosis. I am thankful that I am getting better with my New LifeStyle Mediterranean diet and Keto. Please get A hematologist and the test completed if my doctor had not pushed me to get the test I would not know. Remember God is good and he will help you. God Bless You!
