My 4 year old son is now on a maintenance dose following disimpaction and we are using guidance from our bowel nurse. The Laxido is very effective for him so at the moment he is on half a sachet of Laxido every other day and 5ml Fybogel day and night, with 5ml sodium picosulfate after evening meal. He is having a very soft but large poo every morning and night in his nappy, but throughout the day he is crossing his legs still and seemingly involuntarily passing small amounts of soft poo that (sorry!) just sticks to his bum. I am having him sit on the toilet regularly throughout the day and following meals. He is happy to do this and I can see him trying, but if he does produce a poo on the toilet it’s just a small amount then he wants to get straight off. When I try to get him to try and pass more he says he doesn’t want to do a big poo on the toilet. 10 minutes later he can be crossing his legs again so I know he needs more. He is yet to tell me that he needs to go to the toilet, I’m having to get him to sit regularly.
I have read that the bowel can be stretched after disimpaction and the muscles need time to retrain - could this be why we are seeing him trying to hold in small amounts throughout the day? Because he’s doing a large soft poo in his nappy once or twice a day should I not be too concerned about this? Because the poo is still very soft and sticky should I be looking to reduce the laxido further to aid him not soiling throughout the day or do I just accept this is the way it has to be for a few months? How can I get him to try to do a larger poo on the toilet, is it just a time thing to build his confidence? Any help would be appreciated
