7 month baby getting solid pops

Hi,

I just arrived from abroad and staying in the UK with my 7 month old baby girl. We from few days started giving solid food slowly as per doctor recomondation. We gave her Heinz rice with vegetables, fruit porridge and home made rice vegetables. But still she is doing solid pops but popping 4 to five times. We also give her water to drink with bit sugar as she does not want to eat water as it is. Is this normal ? Any advice

Probably best to seek medical advice if you have any concerns.

Dear raviwithfuture , we would recommend speaking to your local doctor. Your daughter needs to still be having milk at this age, but definitely introduce water as well if she is on solids now. Your doctor should complete a physical examination and give you advice on the best diet and the amount of fluids. They may suggest a macrogol laxative (cosmocol, movicol or laxido), it is a powder which you mix with 62.5ml water. The powder combines with the water and delivers that water to the bowel, so it gets absorbed into the poo and becomes softer and easier to pass (it can get quite runny, this is normal). I had telephone appointment with GP and they told me to follow NHS website diet plan and give that. I don't know why the doctor always says to follow NHS website. I also requested them to refer our child to child specialist doctor but not doing either.

She is having a regular milk along with these foods.

This does sound normal, babies do tend to poo much more regularly and it will be solid if the baby has started eating. Are you concerned the poo is too hard or the baby is going too many times a day? The doctor would have referred you to a specialist if they thought there was a problem so that’s probably a good sign. Unfortunately appointments with specialists are very sought after and they will only refer you if it is absolutely necessary.

I would recommend that you seek help from your local health visitor. Health visitors offer drop in sessions each week where they can weigh your baby and answer lots of feeding questions. You will get much more help from them than a GP.

Each local area has a different health visitor centre/service so you have to find it online or your GP should be able to direct you to your local health visitor. Keep going with the water slowly but it doesn’t matter how much water they drink at this stage. They should still be drinking lots of milk.
