Looking for advice

Hi. I'm just looking for some feedback and advice. I work with a young man who is in his 20s and have a few disabilities and experiences  extreme anxiety. He is a joy to work with.

He uses a special device and phone to communicate, his overall understanding is ok.

He has been having accidents so his mum decided to have him wear a nappy pants/pull ups. He isn't aware I know,  so I am wondering if anyone has any advice how I should let him tell him without upsetting or hurting his feelings?   Also  I am worried about how I am going to find out when he had an accident because I'm not sure he is going to let me know.

Thank you so much

hi what a wonderful job you have it sounds so rewarding. Maybe you could have a conversation about how you want to make sure he’s always comfortable and doesn’t get sore anywhere on his body and that includes helping him with toileting . That together you could agree a sign or code for him to let you know he needs to get changed or use the loo and agree what level of help he wants with this. Good luck

Hi BlueMaple ,

Thanks for your post, it's lovely that you want to protect this young man's feelings and support him in such a way.

Whilst our support is offered for children up to the age of 19, and there is lots of helpful information on our website, you may be able to find some further information and resources on the website of Bladder and Bowel UK, bbuk.org.uk/ which is an organisation supporting adults as well as children. We wish you and this young man every success in his toileting journey. Best wishes ERIC
