my 5 year old autistic son is still in nappies he loves sitting on the toilet wipes himself, flushes the chain and washing his hands he just will not wee today he wore pants to school for the first time he sat on the toilet on and off through the day he didn’t do a wee and hardly drunk any water he came home and wet on the floor after he done it he knew he needed the toilet it is not good for him to keep holding his wee any advice would be appreciated

Hi, my son is also on the spectrum and will not use the toilet at school. It's something we're working on. His school has been helpful and given us lots of things to try. They offered him use of a separate toilet, maybe this could help at your son's school if anxiety is an issue. I think our son doesn't always recognise when he needs the loo or it doesn't feel urgent. He doesn't wet himself but it's the last thing on his mind. I think it's to do with interoception. He also needs to be reminded to drink water. We set the goal to drink at least one bottle of water while at school and remind him daily that if he feels like he needs a wee at school, he can go and how he can go. I think there is so much going on it is really hard to tell what the issue is. We just keep trying. We've thought about how he can signal to the teacher that he wants to use the toilet as he doesn't like asking for things or drawing attention to himself. Maybe that could help your son too. Using the makaton sign or something else. We also work on toileting independence at home. Remind him to go and encourage him to stand up wee. He got into the habit of sit down wees and I think that could be part of not wanting to wee at school too. Sorry not much help but you're not alone. Hope it gets easier for your son soon.
