Hi, my son is 9 and we are going through disimpaction at the moment. We did it a few weeks back but thought we knew better and stopped. Silly us because he’s now very uncomfortable and it’s cost us a lot in Private fees. Anyway, we are over a week in and he is still in tears a few times a day with pain in his stomach. I just want to ask from anyone’s previous experience is this to be expected when things are moving and breaking down? I read on the website it shouldn’t hurt just be uncomfortable but it’s enough to make him cry. In his x ray and from examination they confirms he is completely full up!!
Any advise is much appreciated.

It can hurt, my son is prescribed buscopan to relieve the cramping which has helped a bit. If very impacted it can squash the bladder making it difficult to urinate and cause pain from a full bladder - it can also lead to kidney problems. It's a slog and a long one at that! If your son is cooperative then keep going with daily medication and reduce very slowly - be prepared to up the dose again if needed. It's tempting to stop when they feel better but like antibiotics, you have to stay the course. If he's not cooperative you need to be sneaky, inventive and use bribery sparingly when all else has failed. I know it's hard work but you don't want to go through disempaction more than once! Good luck.
