2.5 year old withholding

My 2.5year old took so easily to potty training last month. He mastered it within a few hours and has never wet himself since the first day. Day 4 of potty training and he still needed a bowel movement. He has always gone every single day while in nappies. So 4 days of not going was scary for him. Unfortunately it was very difficult to pass and he ended up with a tear. Every time he goes now he has pain and some fresh blood. Our GP prescribed cosmocol to help the tear heal (keeping the stools soft). He is so afraid of going and feeling pain that he will hold for 3 days sometimes 5. How do u encourage him to go? We have books, loads of fibre in his diet, a daily dose of cosmocol, plenty of fluids and lots of running around. I've heard of senna but where do we get it in liquid form?

It's such a stressful time for us all. Poor little chap, wish we could just help him feel less afraid.

Leave pooing in the potty until he is actually going and not witholding.ask your gp for the senna, this alongside the cosmocol will help.

OK thanks. I did try to get him to go in his nappy again but he really doesn't want to do it. Any tips on trying to get him to put it on? Or is it just introducing it and being consistent. He wants to wear his big boy pants.

If he wants to wear boy pants put them over the nappy but take him to toilet to do his poo even if it is in his nappy he does it

Right I will start this today and keep at it until he stops withholding. I'll hopefully get senna from our GP, we did have to really beg for the laxative. I reckon we have started too soon. Lots of pressure from the mother in law to start potty training when he turned 2 so we waited for another 6 months before trying. Fingers crossed this will help. Thank you.

Please ignore your mother in law, she has no right to pressure you. You need to wait until your child is ready not when they say you should be doing it, that's why problems start, the child isnt ready. Follow their lead not hers!

Try blowing things on the toilet too, bubbles or balloons are fun and the help with the muscles that control pooling. It also makes it fun and might take he’s mind off being on the toilet!

Toilet roll in the potty or toilet so it's more of a soft passing rather than a plop, regular toilet sits 20 mins after meals with feet supported/using potty. Loads of waterBe careful with giving lots of fibre. Fibre is good but if constipated certain types of fibre can make it worse. Oats are the best. Go easy on dairy. Big cup of pressed apple juice. Prune pouches. Maybe Vaseline on bottom?

Our continence nurse prefers Sodium Picosulfate for withholding rather than senna.

Thank you. I will ask about this tomorrow when I call the GP.

The GP prescribed this. 2.5ml twice a day. He has been taking it for 3 days now but still no movement. I don't know how on earth they can hold like that. Maybe some movement tomorrow 🤞
