Overnight Dryness

Our daughter is 4.5 and still in nappies overnight despite being reliably dry during the day for almost 2 years. We don't let her drink after 5.30, bed is at 6.45 with one last wee. We encourage her to poo each day and try just before bed to reduce pressure. However she is still waking up with nappies that are really full. She is desperate to come out of them and regularly asks. I just wondered if anyone can make any recommendations I am wondering whether I should try her out of nappies over Easter to see if she is just so dependent on them she doesn't realise? Thank you all for any help.

You could try an alarm, you just clip in a leg hole of her nappy and it should sound when she's wet, that should make both of yous more aware of when she's peeing at night.

Have you tried waking her?, there's conflicting reports on here about when you should and shouldn't take them to the loo in the night, but if she want to give up nappies it might be worth trying.

Does she manage a reasonable sized wee when she gets her nappy off in the morning?

I would be hesitant about ditching the nappies straight away, that could be problematic if there still full every morning.

She is still only young, essentially you are waiting for the hormone vasopressin being produced and that's something you can't control. There are things that you can do to help though, ensure that she drinks plenty of water during the day, this will help to train the bladder to hold more liquid, do not lift to take to the toilet at night as it only manages the issue and not deal with it, but do take her to the toilet before bed twice and make sure she completely empties her bladder, count to 30, you will be surprised how much wee comes out again. Don't restrict liquids after a certain time, it doesn't actually work . Have a read of this article bbuk.org.uk/wp-content/uplo... . Bedwetting is extremely common, i think in a class of 30 children (primary age) 1in 3 will still be wetting at night.

Try her and give her that trust, she may relax a bit.

My DS struggled to get dry at night until he was 8. I got an alarm after reading advice here because he was able to sleep right through - so deeply we figured this could be part of the problem.

To be honest I wasn’t very optimistic and we were at our wits end, as by that time we had tried pretty much everything else. After 11 nights he was dry. I still don’t really understand why it worked but it did and only had the occasional accident when he was really tired.

Trust that you will get there 💛
