My 5 year old hasn’t been the toilet for about 2 weeks but wasn’t experiencing any discomfort, called the doctor who advised he sounded impacted (this was done over the phone not a physical examination) upped the dosage of movicol and got to type 7 on the Bristol stool chart when up to 8 sachets of movicol, called the doctor who advised is now not impacted and to lower dosage which I have done 6 sachets yesterday and 4 today BM are still type 7 but has control so only coming out when pushing on toilet, does this sound I’m on the right track?

Have we disimpacted???
What colour are the stools, are they particularly dark and foul smelling? You are reducing too quickly, you need to reduce very very slowly i.e. 8,8,8,7,7,7,6,6,6 and so on until you reach a suitable maintenance dose that produces type 4 stools on the Bristol Stool Chart. Also in so many cases Drs are poorly educated in this field and how does he know that your son is still not impacted?
Thank you for replying, the stools are I would say a medium brown and aren’t foul smelling.
I had one box and the doctor only prescribed me 1 other box of movicol so will have to see if they will prescribe more to reduce the dosage more slowly.
I know I think it’s just the times we are in that they will not see him face to face so we cannot say for sure if this has worked, and they also didn’t discuss maintenance.
To be honest Drs are so poorly educated in this field. You need to tell them you need more to complete the disimpaction properly. You do not want to just stop the movicol at the end of the disimpaction it will undo all the work you have done and definitely wont help.
I agree they could do with more education and the nhs website could offer more guidance. I did find this after hours of googling for answers which before speaking to you was the most useful thepoonurses.uk/disimpactio...
