Starting Disimpaction during holidays. Can anyone give advice please? We have been on the waiting list for a long time to see our the bowel nurse and shes finally got in touch and wants my daughter who is 5 in January to start disimpaction the week before christmas. I'm still waiting for all the information and details to arrive in the post. She said she would be available via email daily to help me through the whole process but i was just a bit concerned how long this will take, Will the worst be over before Christmas if we start on the 19th? Do we need to buy some pull ups for this time? did people still leave the house? I have to work 2 long shifts during this week and my daughter Will be with nanny, also she will visit her dad once during this time too. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you 😁

We did disimpaction over Christmas 3years ago with 13 year old. It’s different for everyone but we hadn’t reached full disimpaction by Christmas Day and it was halfway through Christmas week before we reached brown water. It was difficult but with support from the nurse and very very slow reduction of medication (10 months until we reached no medication) following this we have been clear since and no accidents. My boy had been soiling since 5 and this has changed his life. There are no short cuts with disimpaction but that tricky Christmas was so worth it. Best wishes to you all xx

Hi.As above there is no set time or easy way around this. My little one has been disimpacting since September and we still haven't reached brown rusty water. We are on maximum laxatives and additional sodium picosulfate we are on the maximum for that too. (I hope yours goes better than ours is) I would buy some pull ups to help prevent too many accidents, as well as hygiene reasons if she's not at home. Just make sure you keep fluids up inbetween the laxatives for extra fluids.

Good luck 👍

It will be different for everyone, depending on your child and how severe the blockage is. My advice is make sure you have enough Laxido/Movicol for a full disimpaction and start of a maintenance dose. At least 2 boxes for the disimpaction.

Speak to the GP explain you are about to do one and need it on repeat prescription. It will save the panicking later, trust me.

Get some pull ups just in case but you may no need them. If you haven’t already, start a really decent toilet routine (sit on the toilet for 5-10 mins 20-30 mins after every meal) and get some things like balloons, party blowers, bubbles. The stimulate the correct muscles and make it a bit more fun. We’ve actually found blowing in one of those bottles with straws in the best.

With any luck, he’ll get most of the poo on the toilet - my daughter oddly found the really watery stuff easier to get to the toilet with (maybe it felt like urine not sure).

Lastly, try and not stop the disimpaction until you have rusty like water for three days straight. Then reduce the sachets slowly, like 1 sachet every 3-4 days until you reach a maintenance dose that gets 1-3 soft ‘snake like’ poos a day. If you reduce too early or quickly you are in danger of making it worse and having to start all over again. I did this the first time and was disimpacting again a few months later.

Stay on it longer than you think it will help in the long run.

In the meantime give this article a read bornready.uk/blog/the-mecha...

It was an eye opener for me.

Good luck and you are not alone.
