Catheters

Or son is twelve and has always had bladder problems. His continence nurse has told us that he isn't emptying his bladder fully and said that he should be self catheterising. This would have the added benefit that he could wear a smaller, more discreet pad at school. He hates wearing pads and finds them really embarrassing and so that would be fantastic. The problem is, he just can't catheterise himself. He has tried and tried but he says it hurts too much and can't do it. Has anyone got any suggestions?

My daughter began self catheterising earlier this year. Obviously the whole thing is a bit different for them both but has he been given Cathy jel to put on the end of the catheter to lubricate it? My daughter didn’t get on with the one that numbs the area so just used a lubricant. I hope he gets there. It took my daughter a few weeks to get to grips with it and even longer mentally getting to get to grips with it all. It has helped her though so I wish you lots of luck x
