Disimpaction

Hello, my 4 year old is witholding due to a very difficult poo 3 weeks ago which has left him terrified of going. We tried cosmocol but he refused to drink it so have been giving lactulose with little success.

I have now got hold of some liquid macrogol 4000 (dulcosoft) but am unsure what dose to use for disimpaction.

He hasn't been in 4 days now. Yesterday i gave 30ml. The dose is 5g macrogol per 10ml so 15g. So far i have given same amount. Has anyone used this rather than sachets?

Hi Yellow0123

Sorry I don't have any experience with dulcosoft, movicol was the best thing for my little one who started withholding at 2.5years old and went on for 2 years. We did try lactulose and picosulphate early on but it gave him severe tummy pains which he associated with the pain of passing the hard stool which kick started this whole nightmare in the first place so made things worse for him.

We eventually managed to work out that following a disimpaction with movicol to clear him out completely, a maintenance dose of 1 or 2 sachets per day disguised in his juice was sufficient to keep him regular and without pain.

We are 6 months clear of any issues or medication so I promise there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Might be worth trying to get hold of some movicol and carry out a disimpaction to make it comfortable for him to pass again.

Good luck ❤️

Thank you for your reply. After i posted yesterday I gave him another dose of dulcosoft so equivalent of roughly 4 movicol sachets. He did a big sausage like poo followed by a very sloshy one which took him by surprise and he didnt make it to the toilet to start. Not sure how much to give him today, maybe same again then reduce?

Always good to reduce gradually when looking for the ideal maintenance dose, good luck!
