Hi All hope you can help I have been struggling with my sons soiling for over 2 years now. He is now 4 and half. I've been using movical on and off but now it's got to the point where we as a family are really struggling going through over 5 pairs of pants a day. We have our 2nd baby due in September and my son will be starting reception so we really want to get this under control. I have been giving him 2 sachets a day for a week now and his poos are now like mush very loose. Now this is happening shall I continue with the 2 a day or lower to 1 a day?

Have you done a disimpaction at all? I had exactly the same situation with my 4 year old and we eventually worked out that the constant soiling was an indication that she was really badly constipated. If you haven’t already I’d definitely recommend giving the ERIC helpline a call. They’re fantastic!

Hi i have tried the disimpaction before but when it gets to around 5/6 sachets I can never get him to finish it all in the day. I have to currently mix it with juice or milk as he won't take otherwise.

Yes it’s a case of if you already done a disimpaction and two sachets is the maintenance dose or if you are just doing two sachets to keep it regular and soft. There’s lots of information on the Eric website on how to go about it.

If he’s still soiling then disimpaction would definitely be the way to go as he may be blocked up. You can get a prescription from an online GP (as you would need at least a box to complete it) then bringing him down to a working maintenance dose.

After that the next step would be figuring out his maintenance dose and establishing a toilet schedule.

Good luck and remember you are not alone!

I have to currently mix it with juice or milk as he won't take otherwise. Reason why I've been only doing 2 a day and keeping it at that for now. His still pooing alot throughout the day and most of the time him unaware but it's alot and like I said before it's very loose now.

I have boxes of movical as been going on for a while his been having regular hospital appointments for few years now but they just don't seem to be helping.

Ah I see the problem.

Are you doing single sachets or more than one at a time? I found that my daughter likes to drink mainly at meal times so I was doing two doses at each meal with juice mixed in (and double the water content before hand).

That way it’s technically only 3 drinks with it in so I don’t feel I’m constantly badgering her to drink her medicine...

I use LIVI app it’s a FaceTime type of GP and they can send a prescription to your nearest pharmacy

I did two doses at a time with my daughter too as I was struggling to get the doses in her and if she knew she was having Movicol then she would refuse to drink it. Eventually I found I could hide 2 doses in some pure fruit juice or chocolate soya milk without her noticing. I also hid some in a hot chocolate drink without her being able to taste it. It’s really important to make up the dose with the correct amount of water first then you can add it to almost anything.

My daughter was having a lot of accidents too and it wasn’t until after we’d finished the disimpaction that we realised how badly constipated she’d been. She’s now on a maintenance dose of 2 Movicol and 5ml of senna a day and not had any accidents since Christmas.

Good luck with it!
