Movacol/poo problems

I’m after some advice please! I’m at my wits ends and I don’t know what else to do. My little one is currently on movacol and has been since just before Christmas. She has been potty trained since April last year and it came to a point where she had a hard stool and the problem started there.

Cut a long story short we are on 1 sachet per day. We started off on half a sachet as instructed by the doctor and was told to go up to 1. She actually didn’t poo at all with half a sachet but started going regularly when she had 1. But for the last few days her bowel movements have changed. For example today she has been on the toilet 9 times and it’s coming so quickly she is starting it in her knickers. Sorry for the detailed message but the poo has been stuck in her bum but it’s been loose at the same time.

I’m now thinking is 1 sachet too much? Half didnt seem enough before.

The GP doesn’t really help so I’m asking for some advice on here if anyone can give it to me. I just want to get this sorted for her.

Thanks in advance!

Hi there, we have the same issue with our 2yo daughter. We saw a specialist last week, after a long wait, and he has suggested cutting back on the movicol to one every day to reduce the frequency of her going but give her a softener which he has prescribed. I had to keep going back to my doctor to get heard but trust your gut feel. Good luck x

Thanks for your response. How many sachets was your daughter on before you went down to one? Has it improved since you gave her a softener? I’m wondering whether to go back down to half and try and give her something else to help with the stools. X

Perhaps 1 sachet was enough just to get things going again, you could try going back to half again now and seeing how that goes for a week or so? It’s all trial and error with these sachets! But key is to give it at least a few days when you change dose, so you can see the effect. Good luck! X

Thanks for your response. It would make sense so maybe I will give that a try. Thank you x

My daughter use to happen the same thing,so I divide it in 2 and see what happened it was a bit better but I stopped it and gave her prunes just put 1 or 2 prunes in the blender with some water, blend it and giver her 2 or 3 teaspoons only when neeeded

Or a bit of warm orange juice in the morning

Hi dancing2020, it sounds like your little one is constipated and needs disimpaction. What she is passing is overflow that manages to get around the blockage. Speak to your gp and let them know you need to disimpact, there is a leaflet from NHS that gives you instructions on how to do it safely, so I would ask for that too. It will mean increasing her movicol up to maybe 10-12 sachets per day until she runs water like poo and gradually reduce again to a maintenance dose of movicol. It really does work but she will need to stay home during this routine as it can be very messy and could be embarrassing for her hope this helps and good luck xx
