Disimpaction- now worked ?

Hi all

I’m sure you’ll be fed up with me posting. We have just finished disimpaction my daughter last week and using a maintenance dose of 3 Per day. For the past 3 days we have had soiled accidents (2 to 3 per day). Does that mean she is still impacted? Or the maintenance dose is wrong?

Hi Redxmas.

It is common for some children to still get some soiling after completing a dismimpaction (she should have passed brown, rusty water which indicates her bowel is cleared). As she has had a lot of water added to her bowel it can take a bit of time for everything to settle down and for the stretched bowel to regain tone again. You can keep her on the 3 sachets for 5-7 days and then lower it by 1/2 a sachet every 2-3 days until she is going for a soft, formed poo once or twice a day and then keep her on that maintenance dose to help regulate her poo. Establishing a good toilet routine will help her regain her signals by encouraging her to sit at 'prime pooing times' which is when the bowel naturally contracts. This involves getting her to sit and relax on the loo 20-30 minutes after every meal, after a bath (the warm water can help relax her ) and before bed for 5 mins. Over time the soiling should become less frequent and she should be getting more poo on the toilet.

If your ever in doubt and wondering if she has got backed up again you can always try the sweetcorn test at home for more info visit: eric.org.uk/Blog/how-fast-a...

Thank- you. I increased to 4 as the maintenance dose and is now starting to feel the need to go. My doc wants me to try suppositories as she felt tummy and she still feels constipated. I’m a bit reluctant to do that
