5 year old daughter soiling

Hi there,

I have a 5 1/2-year-old girl who has never been happy to poo on the toilet. She has always wanted to poo standing up in a nappy or in her knickers. She went through a period of being constipated and so we took the pressure off of her going to the toilet completely and let her know that she could poo however she was comfortable.

She is now doing soft, reasonably sized poos in her nappy or knickers around three or four times a week, but often has soiled knickers as well and sometimes has a few days of tiny amounts of poo many times a day before she will return to doing bigger poos again.

She wants to poo in the toilet and says that she doesn’t know why she can’t. I’m not too worried about that at the moment and don’t mind how long it takes to get her towards using the toilet, but I’m starting to worry that she is loosing the sensation of knowing when she needs to poo. She will sometimes say she is doing a poo and will just end up with a smear in her knickers. I feel for her, it must be so frustrating. Has anyone else been through this and have any advice on what I should do next?

The soiling could be overflow soiling which they can't help. She probably needs a disimpaction,see the poo nurses video to get help with this. You normally up the sachets by two per day until the poo is very watery and then return to a maintenance dose. The loss of sensation can take months or even years to return . Good luck

Good! It definitely sounds like she’s constipated, so the sooner you disimpact the better.
