Been to see my sons paediatrician today who has changed his medication from senna to sodium picosulfate . Wandered if anybody else’s child has had this or is one it had it worked for them and feedbacks would be great .

My son who is five now as been soiling him self now for two years with no success of him pooing on the loo , we have tried everything and nothing has worked . The paediatrician has says his rectum is always full so he is not getting the sensation of when he needs to go . He is also on movical. There aren’t saying if this doesn’t work we would have to look at disposiies

Have you ever done a disimpaction on him?

We’re on Senna for 2 years, increased from 1 tablet when he was 5 to 2 tablets now that he is 6 years old. I will ask our paediatrician about pico sulphate, others on the forum have mentioned it.

We are using micro enemas. Basically the poo’s got to come out before he leaves for school. Either the meds and breakfast make him go, otherwise the enema which is very fast acting. My son doesn’t have any problem using the enema. Needed to bribe him lots of money at first, when he was 5, but after a while, we offered less and less and now he’ll just let me do it and he knows that will keep him from having an accident at school. He is 6.5 now.

Yes have done disinpactions. Last night I gave him his first dose is sp and this this morning he did two very large poos one in his pants on the way to the loo and one on the loo he told us poo was coming which he has never done . His doctor has said his rectum is also full and he doesn’t get the sensation of when to go so we need to keep it empiry for when he does full up he will get the feeling hopefully

Hiya - we’ve also just switched from Senna to SP. Second dose today. My daughter says it tastes much nicer and we haven’t had any tummy ache from it but a massive poo, bigger than usual. She had really bad tummy aches on the Senna, but could be a loaded bowel causing that rather than the Senna itself so we are trying the SP to try and push more through and hopefully get rid of tummy aches.

What dosage of sp are you giving him?

I just found online that sodium picosulfate is the same as PicoPrep, which is a medication we were prescribed twice for disimpaction pirpose only. We used 2 sachets for 2 days and that stuff was really strong, pooped everything in the gut right out, shot out poo and lots of liquid. Found it quite scary at first, as I worried about dehydration.

So I’m trying to understand how you use something so strong to only produce a ‘normal’ bowel movement.

The package reads 2x15.5g sachets, each sachet contains

Sodium picosulfate 10mg

Magnesium Oxide 3.5g

Critic Acid 12g

Aspartame 36mg

he is having 2.5ml a day (his got in liquid form) his only been on it for 3 days and it’s made a massive difference already . I give it to him at about 4 when he comes home from school he does a poo at about 6 in the morning and again after lunch and that as been it so far and all in the toliet and he is for the first time ever getting the sensation that he needs to go .It’s dual action stimulating the muscles of both the large intestine and the rectum

What was your experience using Senna? My son was taking 1 tablet for the first year and a half, started using when he was almost 5, now on 2 tablets. But sometimes he poops in the morning and other times nothing happens.

I had reduced it at some point from 1 tablet to half and the poo stopped moving through the gut. I know because we do a micro enema on mornings when the medication has no effect, and I can see how much poo was in the rectum. And without the Senna, not much arrived in the rectum.

My little boy was having 10 ml senna liquid form each night from 5ml . Which I found even on the higher dose no real improvement it was basically making him poop more somes days and his poo was very runny it would come out with no warning,which wasn’t great as we wanted him to have the sensation to go which was part of the promblem
