Ok, not having much luck with answers, so let's try a different question.

Has anyone had experience of the following? My son says he realises he needs to pass urine, but sometimes the message is received too late, and he is already wet.

Any idea what we can do? Is this related to bladder training?

How old is your son if under 5 you can get advice from your health visitor. Sorry not much advice.x

He's 9. We keep putting off getting professional advice, as we weren't sure some of it was down to laziness and poor bladder training. We are trying really hard this week with drinking enough, regular toilet trips etc. and will see where we stand.

Hello Mithical,

Something similar happened to my daughter at around the same age and we were told after investigation including a kidney scan that she had a 'twitchy' bladder most probably related to chronic constipation. At the time she was on a daily laxatives do I thought the constipation was well under control, but looking back wonder now if she had outgrown her dosage. She was put on Oxybutinin which seemed to help initally, calming do the sudden urge and her daily dose of Movicol was increased.

Yes I also suggest twitchy bladder as this is what my son has. We are no closer to getting this fixed at the moment so can’t help any more - sorry

My son is older, 13, we originally went to the GP because of rushing for a wee, not always making it, nighttime wetting, he was around 8. The GP asked my son if did a poo. He said yes, which was true. Over the next year GP suggested bullying, etc etc. A year later another GP diagnosed a bowel blockage (impaction). Once cleared (sachets and sachets of Movicol up to 17 doses a day) things improved.

Basically, if he has a bowel/ constipation issue it presses on the bladder creating more urgent need to wee and has also prohibited bladder growth.

Now he has 2 sachets of Movicol and tolteridine (twitchy bladder) medication and things have improved enormously. No daytime rushing to the loo / no bedtime wetting.

I would definitely take your son to GP or contact school nurse program (gave some good basic advice), you can self-refer.

We are now under the care of the Paediatric Consultant at the local hospital. Please don’t leave it. I wish I hadn’t. If they give you a urine test and send you on your way... keep going back, until it’s sorted!

I appreciate your reply. I am giving it this week encouraging my son to go to the toilet, drink more etc. I feel he's being a bit lazy and we haven't fully trained his bladder.

He has his bowels opened regularly, he doesn't pass constipated stool. But I will keep the constipation comments in mind.

We've had 3 good days this week, so fingers crossed.

Oh good. Fingers crossed for you. Worth bearing in mind as I couldn’t believe my sons problems were down to constipation.
