New drug

Hello, My son has recently been prescribed Zonisamide. His epilepsy has not been controlled with other drugs although both Lamotrigine and Oxcarbazepine kerbed tonic clonic seizures. Introduced to Keppra and tonic clonic returned...so now suggested to stop Keppra and introduce Zonisamide. On low dose of Oxcarbazepine. I have read side effects of this drug and side effects concern me greatly. Anyone else on this drug? Thanks

Hello there. I was assured by my Consultant Neurologist that Keppra would most likely prove to be effective and that proved to be the case over the last seven years. The exception when the pharmacy gave me the seemingly identical medication from a different supplier/source. I have it recorded on my medical records to have the medication sourced from one.

I suggest that you attend your local Epilepsy group initially on your own to decide if it would be suitable for your son. It could be of real benefit and reassure your son.

Best wishes

Lamotragine didn't suit me because of the side effects it gave me but it is a common well tolerated prescription It did control the seizures.

Hi I understand your concern however there is potentially dangerous side effects with all AED. Personally from my experience encourage yourself and your son to write a daily chart of how he feels emotionally etc , to be Extremely honest and yourself to do likewise.... it may not seem like much but it builds a picture. He must not feel like he needs to hide anything and if you find out he does you also should understand that it maybe fear due to the medication resulting in this.... or just he can't really process his emotions as it seems overwhelming for him. This l creates a very real dilemma for parents. Of course i dont know about all medications however, i do know what works for one may have negative effects on another person, Phenytoin, Phenobarbital and Keppra i know seems to have more negative effects than most. As a parent all you can do is the best you can and you have asked the question... keep up the good work. If your interested in a greater response I suggest going on the MyEpilepsyTeam app. I WISH YOU WELL.

Am sorry to hear your situation and you might not agree with this but cannabis oil will stop the seizures I know someone who got gave it by a Dr back in the late 90s no more seizures its all out now because of the Internet but that stops it .the problem is big Pharma doesn't want you to know this it even cures alot of cancers you don't need to worry about your son getting high from it you can get it without the THC that's the bit that gives you the high wish you all the best

I was on Keppra for 6 years (1000 ) and I took naproxen daily due to major headaches. My eyes started blinking and feeling like sticks were poking my eyeballs and could barely see along with facial twitching. 2 ophthalmologist stated that my tear ducts were not working. I went in for yet another opinion and was told it was a neurological reaction. Went back to my neurologist and wanted off of it. I did not realize how close I felt to a stroke until the pain started receding. Vimpat was great and I functioned very well on it until my insurance decided they wouldn't pay for it. I have been on Lamotrigine for 4 years but started having some mild break throughs. That worked fine with no side effects. I just got started on Oxcarbazepine along with the Lamotrigine and was looking for some input from others on here. (p.s. the Keppra blog will scare your socks off) Let me know how your son has been on Oxcarbazepine please. Thanks
