I am new here so please do bear with me. I'm starting much needed dental as my teeth are crumbling & falling out. I've been on Lamictal since my first seizure in 2013 and now on 500mg (300am/200pm) Concerned about local used to freeze - There is data everywhere but only for GA. I'm having trouble eating anything that needs chewing so really can't do nothing Does anyone have any thoughts

Hi

Thank you for your message.

Its important to let your dentist know about your epilepsy and the medicines you take. They will be able to tell you if the local anesthetic they will be using could cause any issues with your epilepsy. They will also be able to put in place a plan, in the event that you were to have a seizure during the procedure.

In some cases, if there is a high risk of someone having a seizure during a dental procedure, the dentist will refer them to a dental hospital to have the procedure done there. This is because the dental hospital are better equipped to deal with this situation.

I hope you hear from others on this platform, as sharing information and experiences can be a good idea. Can I just check you also know about our other services?

We have our virtual support groups epilepsy.org.uk/virtual-groups. We have our forum4e online community forum.epilepsy.org.uk/, and we are on facebook facebook.com/epilepsyaction and twitter twitter.com/epilepsyaction.

Thank you Jess

My dentist does know I have epilepsy and also how to manage but not any actual information on the effects of anaesthetic. The plan is for fillings and then extractions so perhaps the process for fillings will show. I was heartened to read a post here by somebody else with the same dental problems who has a dentist and had procedures so perhaps the issue is with GA. I can't afford a seizure as I live alone in a small village with only a 2 hourly public transport system so can but try

Tell your dentist that you're taking Lamictal. It isn't affected by anaesthetics. Been under local and full many times since I went on to 750 my daily.

Hello, I went to the dentist ( rootsonwhytedental.com ) for a tooth filling last month. The loss of a filling is not a dental emergency. However, if you can discuss your health condition and medicines with your dentist. in order for your dentist to be wary of treatment. If you're feeling pain and sensitivity around the afflicted tooth, don't ignore it. This might lead to infection, so don't put off seeing your dentist.
