youtu.be/rWSkwNfG2bc?si=SnR... I am currently having issues with switching medications and during my research found this awesome video on YouTube which explains clearly how different medications work for the many different types of seizures! Best wishes to all for a happy and healthy 2025 !
I consider this to be a "MUST SEE" video f... - Epilepsy Action
I consider this to be a "MUST SEE" video for anyone who is receiving medical treatment for epilepsy!

Thank you so much for sharing this video. Very, very informative and easy to follow along, even as a layperson.
Exactly my thoughts. I was totally gobsmacked when seeing this and felt that I had to share this with others going through our search for an understanding of just what is going on in our brain when given medical treatment for epilepsy!
I am literally in the hospital with my 10yo daughter at this moment after another 24hr period of cluster seizures, emergency meds, and now loading doses of Keppra to add to her already 800mg of carbamazepine. If only all patients had the opportunity to receive the level of information provided in this video from their care providers off of the hop so much heartache, frustration, and confusion would be resolved.
As a warning to others embarking on this journey with their children; an inaccurate or unspecific diagnosis can lead to improper medicine script, which can even worsen seizure activity. My child was diagnosed with focal epilepsy, and since being on carbamazepine her once a week seizures have escalated to clusters of 7 to 10 tonic-clonic ... I have since learned that carbamazepine has been known to worsen generalized seizure activity. I'm not looking forward to the medicine change ... but it can't be worse than the one she's on.
I learned so much from that video after having epilepsy since 1989. Now you will understand why I shared it..... I wish you luck with your daughter's health 🙏 ❤️
Since stopping carbamazepine over 12 months ago due to increasing side-effects from it I requested my GP to advise on a possible alternative modern equivalent of carbamazepine. They came back with starting on Levitiracetam which I didn't tolerate well, then Brivaracetam at 100mg bd which was also causing me difficulty with excess tiredness, plus when I reduced to 75mg bd the tiredness was better, however I was having absence seizures which I wasn't aware of due to living alone. After viewing the above 'must see' video I realised that both Levitiracetam and Brivaracetam worked in a different way to carbamazepine. I suggested to my neurology consultant that a sodium channel blocker like carbamazepine might be more suitable for me. He agreed, and within two weeks of starting on Lacosamide ( a modern Sodium channel blocker) the difference was amazing. I am now more energetic, positive minded, and not having any absence seizures.
I STRONGLY ADVISE that you watch this excellent video which will help you to understand how the AED medication you are on works, and if you need to change, the alternative medications which work in the same manner.
If only I had been switched to Lacosamide over 18 months ago, I would not have had the difficulties I have had since stopping carbamazepine.
It was only due to studying this video that my life is back on track.
PLEASE watch this, as it will help you understand easily and clearly just what type of medication you have been prescribed, and may give clues to the type which suit you best !🙏
I truly hope it can help you in the way it has helped me !!!
Take care, and best wishes to all ❤️
