Coil for endo

I am currently going through the peri-menopause.

My GP has strongly advised to have a coil fitted to fix my irregular heavy menstruation. Once this has been rectified I can have HRT that i desperately need.

As a 49year old with no children I didn't want the coil fitted as I have heard horror stories and just didn't want to have it fitted to be removed again.

Any tips or advice would be extremely welcome xx😬

I think everyone reacts differently, I had the coil fitted 4 1/2 years ago and it was great until about 6 months ago, they think it is no longer producing enough hormone to control the endometriosis so we are looking at having mine changed early. Prior to about 6 months ago, I had little pain and no bleeding so it is possible that it could work but again every body is different. I also didn't find the fitting too uncomfortable or traumatic. Is it worth getting it fitted to just see if it helps?

Hi there,

I have the coil (about 2.5 years so far) but I had it fitted when they did my laparoscopy so didn't notice anything as I was under.

Being on the coil has been fine, though it didn't stop my periods. My pain came back after about a year after it had settled from surgery ( about 4-6 months) and after waiting for appointment at hospital am finally getting my pain sorted.

First thing is they were surprised I was getting any periods on the coil ... I was always a heavy period person with alot of clots so I didn't expect them to stop. On the coil it's minimal I just use a daily liner and that's sufficient to contain it.

As for regularity I would say it's not always consistent but It seems to go through phases of consistency and inconsistency.

It does mostly follow a three week break but sometimes i get it after a two week break or a random couple of days of minimal bleeding in-between.

Overall my periods are easier to manage. The pain is the same but they might be able to do something about that.

This is just my experience and I haven't ever had a good experience on contraception but so far this is the best outcome I have ever had. I use a tens machine and the coil is supposed to be suppressing and endo growth.

Hope you get more responses that help you with this decision. oh and I'm 32 incase that helps 😊
