Dealing with symptoms

Hello all,

Does anyone have any tips for dealing with gastro problems during period and at other times during endo flare up?

I had an ultrasound in Jan which found endometrioma/suspected endo, currently waiting for gyne referral.

Every period this year, as well as the usual pelvic and back pain, I have been having extreme bloating and tenderness in my abdomen (blow belly button area). Also struggle to eat normally, sometimes acid reflux, loose stools etc.

I take buscopan which helps a bit, and hot water bottle when I'm home, but would like advice for anything else.

Thanks

Hi there. Obviously everyone is different but I have always found high strength peppermint oil really helpful. Three times a day before/with food. I prefer capsules and the Holland & barratt ones are good and often on offer. But you can take as drops too. Might be worth a try - probably not best to take at the same time as buscopan tho ;)

Also following a FODMAP diet really helps me too throughout the month, when I lapse I really notice it - and obviously I lapse!

Hope you find some relief.

Hello!

I have the same thing with the bloating, acid reflux and frequent, urgent trips to the bathroom. I have found that if I switch to gluten free and meat free with low dairy from about two weeks or so before and during my period, the bloating and acid reflux are reduced, if not totally gone. Everyone is different though so it might be worth experimenting for a month to see if any changes to diet after ovulation help.

I try to have a high fibre diet all the time but do have to watch it when I’m on my period as it can cause extra trips to the bathroom if you already suffer with loose stools. On those days I stick to very bland food and know I can make up the fruit and veggies on another day when my gut is a bit calmer.

The best thing that helped with these symptoms was to start a food/symptoms journal. Everyday I would write down everything I have eaten and drunk and the symptoms I had. After a couple of months I found a pattern and identified triggers. It was super easy and didn't cost anything. I drink green tea with ginger everyday -it is hands down the best painkiller I have ever tried and also helps with occasional indigestion.

The last thing I use is fasting a couple of days before my period. It makes all the difference, reducing the inflammation just before what is for me the worst part of the month.
