I'm on my 4th week of taking dienogest . I'm having terrible side effects such as nausea, headaches, tiredness, dry throat and mouth, broken sleep, no energy everyday. Also having my 1st period on this and it's so heavy I'm on my 3rd packet of towels. Really torn what to do. Do I try carry on and hope side effects ease off or do I stop them ? If anyone has been on these would be great for some advice. Thanks x

Hi

At an appointment I had last week the consultant said I should go on this so your post is helpful, thank you for sharing.

Do you mind sharing why they gave you that and what they said it was to help with as my info was very vague.

Thanks

This is what they do. Some people on here have said they worked for them but not working for me x

I really hope the symptoms ease for you :( it’s so frustrating having to go through so many treatments to find the right one. I had an appointment with my consultant today who has put me on Dienogest too after Medroxyprogesterone absolutely failed to help in any way. He said that side effects of it do mimic pregnancy symptoms which may explain the nausea that you’re experiencing.

I did not get in with Dienogest either. I had a continuous bleed for 28 days and it was so heavy, I ended up in A&E and had to take tranexamic acid

My consultant switched me to Ryeqo which I have been taking since April 2023. For me, my periods settled straight away, I don’t have to take any pain relief anymore. I have the occasional very light period maybe every three months. So far so good.

The downside of Ryeqo is that it can affect bone density. So I’m off for my first bone scan today to check on this.

Hi yeah I was on Tranexamic acid and Naproxen since last June but when I started Dienogest my doctor took me off them and said you can't take both together so this period been horrendous x

They gave me fluids, antibiotics, a scan of some sort I think. And checked for hypovolemia as they struggled to get a cannula in. I was lucky to be taken to the better of my two local hospitals

Thanks, did you have an infection as well? I’ve been bleeding for seven weeks now and it’s very painful. Not stopping on t acid which I’ve taken twice in the past seven weeks for five days

Yes. I had an infection too. I had been bleeding for 28 days. It was really heavy and I was light headed. My husband called 111 and they sent paramedics who recommended going to A&E. They gave me the meds and told me to take them until the bleeding had stopped. I also have an excellent endo nurse who called to check on me and give advice.

I’m so sorry you’re having such a rough time. I’ve been on Dienogest since January after a year of Prostap and I’ve found it to be so helpful. No pain and less side effects than the prostap. Hang on in there and hopefully things will improve for you.

I take this and have virtually no side effects and it has helped with my symptoms, but I’m not sure how helpful that is when that’s not the experience you’re having. Sorry to hear it’s not gone that way for you, definitely check back with the consultant if you can.

I’m on deinogest.

I had a rough transition onto it — hot flushes nausea bleeding excessively

I took some time off work to adjust (about 6 weeks) that could be helpful.

I’ve been on it for 1.5 years now and it’s amazing — I hardly bleed and it’s really regulated my pain.

If I miss a few days I’m in a lot of pain so I think it really helps.

Hang in there

I had about 4 months of side effects with dienogest. But they weren‘t as horrible as yours. Mostly heartburn, hot flushes and constant spotting. Been on it for about a year now and apart from being a bit prone to heartburn after a big meal it‘s been amazing.

Unfortunately everyone is different. I suppose if you can somehow tolerate it at all I‘d probably try and stick with it a bit longer and see if it stops, as this pill might take longer to get used to.

They saying it will take three months to notice the difference. I stopped bleeding from the the first month just spotting now. No heavy side effects. Nausea from time to time. I had terrible pain in my right shoulder with periods before Dienogest but now its almost gone. Hope it will work for you.

I’m in my 4th month of dionegest now and feel like any side effects have settled down now. If you can, try and give it some time to settle. I hope it goes better for you soon!

I tried Dienogest last year, i have tried nearly everything before now being on pro-stap and for me it was the worst of the bunch unfortunately, I lasted two months which felt like a lifetime I really tried to push through with being told it can take 3-6 months to work but I knew my body was telling me it wasn’t right - I’d say listen to your body and gut instinct about it. I had spotting/bleeding on and off but I always remember that within an hour of taking it every day my pelvis would feel swollen, had a lot of bloating and nausea but most of all pain like sharp pains in my pubis area guessing my uterus, I read it has strong affects on the uterus. Everyone’s different one (which is not helpful!)

The endo nurse said I could take cerazatte mini pill alongside it if I wasn’t liking it or wanted protection so I started that too which helped a little - maybe ask about this option? I still ended up stopping as the bleeding started up again quite heavy and wasn’t stopping - too hard to cope with mentally!

Good luck

Did the nausea go away after you switched to mini pill? Been thinking if I should try the same, since I can't handle this stomach pain and nausea anymore
