After 16 years of pain I've been referred to gynae...

I'm 27 and I've endured debilitating pain during my period and ovulation and flooding during my period. The pain and bleeding rules my life. I'm finally seeing a gynae in March which is still so far away. I wonder when I'll be offered surgery? For YEARS I've been told that it's just ibs. I've given birth and that pain wasn't as bad as my periods.

Did anyone's pain and bleeding improve after surgery? Does the gynae just check for endo in the female organs or other places too? Is excision better than ablation?

Hey! I had a similar thing, too much pain around my period which lasted too long and so so heavy, I also wasn't diagnosed until I was 27 or 28. I had my first surgery and I got the coil fitted. The pain decreased massively because my periods stopped completely. Not ideal if you want another child now but if you just need a break from the pain it might be worth trying. Unfortunately some cysts have come back so I'm back on a wait list. I found it completely depends where you live. In Birmingham it took years, in Glasgow after my visit to the gynae I had a surgery date within three weeks. Anywhere you tell them you have pain they should check for endometriosis.

Thank you for replying and it's unfortunate that you've experienced this pain too. I'm seeing this gynae to discuss a laparoscopy. Did this help or do you think it's the coil that's masking the issue as it prevents ovulation? I don't react well to the combined or mini pill. Did you have an excision or ablation? How awful some cysts have returned :(

It's hard to say if it's just masking the issue, but it has made my life easier in the mean time. I also reacted really badly to the pill and was really anti the coil, but I tried it and it has helped. Saying that I know people who tried it and it didn't help so its a complete guessing game. I think having the endometriosis removed helped the most. I had ablation as that was the only option offered to me. I really hope you get this sorted and get some relief, it's so horrible waiting for that definitive answer and you deserve some peace xxxx

I'm glad the coil has helped with the pain! I've heard mixed reviews (although I don't know anyone who's used it for endo). I'm hoping the surgery works for me, but it seems that everything is a guessing game!
