Can surgery be refused due to a high BMI?

Hi everyone

I’m on the waiting list for a gyno appointment to check for endo. I’ve read on here that sometimes MRI scans don’t show endo and you’ve got to have a larp.

Am I right in thinking they won’t do a larp unless you’re in the healthy category for weight on the NHS BMI scale? I eat well but have stopped exercising, which I know is bad.

If this is the case it’s frustrating as I’ve had a full over 40’s health check and there’s nothing wrong. I don’t even drink or smoke and my blood pressure is normal. I’m loosing weight and have lost it but if I need to get down to the healthy weight category on the BMI scale it will take longer than the time I have to wait for the appointment. I’ve lost a lot of weight before from the gym and I was very slim but I still couldn’t meet the BMI target, because I’m curvy, with huge boobs that never reduce. My waist measurement is 32 but I’ve been told they don’t look at that, it’s just your weight.

Has anyone been refused a larp due to their BMI? I will defo try to get more weight off though. I wish they took boob size and build in to account. I’m just worrying that they’ll say all my problems are because of my weight or refuse treatment. I’ve been a size 8 to a size 20 over the years and it makes no difference to my symptoms. I also found that when I went to the gym my pain worsened for some reason.

Sorry for the long post.

Thanks

Hi there, I haven't dealt with the situtation you mentioned in your post but my heart breaks for you and your worry. This should not happen and I was very saddened to hear about how the NHS will deny non-critical surgery to those above a certain BMI. It is incredibly disheartening and unfair to patients. Especially as BMI is a crude measure when it comes to overall health.

I don't know if a laproscopy qualifies here, but it definitely should not. I hope you have a chance to speak to a kind and understanding consultant who will be able to reassure you and take away the fear. I would put this to them directly-- and if they say that it would be delayed, I'd elevate it to the highest level you can. Please take care and good luck.
