Hello , In January I was prescribed 5mg folic acid tablets by my GP only 4 months worth so I finished them in April , so I asked My GP for more and I was told no to go back on the 400mg dose but I have noticed the difference is this normal ? In fact I have stopped taking them full stop , I do have an appointment with my GP Pharmacy about my meditation.

What were you originally prescribed 5mg of folic acid for?

I'm guessing you mean 400micrograms (ug)? That's the standard dose for women trying to conceive, and generally the dose women should be taking.

5mg seems to be if the doctor thinks there's a specific reason to be on a higher dose. Usually with most medication it's prescribed as a trial period to see if it actually does what they hope it would, then you'd go back for repeat blood tests and a check of symptoms to see if it's helped. Did you feel like it helped? If so then that's a reason for going back to your GP and saying you still need to be on the high dose.

Not what you're looking for?
