Hi guys, so I had an ultrasound and it’s come back with my right ovary very enlarged and with many cysts. Dr has said it’s not POCS but it is a polycystic ovary. She thinks the pain I’m getting could be due to this and possibly endometriosis too but she’s not definite. She’s putting me on the mini pill as I can’t have the combined to see if it helps symptoms. But I’m thinking I should have a gynaecology referral to get it all checked out?? I’m going to ask for one. Anyone in similar situation or anyone with advice would be great! I’m a bit worried about the enlarged ovary as I know it can be a sign of cancer.
Update, any advice welcome! : Hi guys, so I... - Endometriosis UK
Update, any advice welcome!
I had the same thing a few months ago... I think the diagnosis was 'polymorphic ovaries' or something like that. My Dr said both of them were enlarged because of all the polyps on them. I started the combined pill not long after that (I was on the depo injection before) and I did notice less pain.
However I still went ahead with the laparoscopy as I wanted a clear answer and they did find endo. Interestingly enough none of it was found on my ovaries and the surgeon said they more of a 'normal' size and that there were no cysts (I'd been on the pill for about 3 weeks at this point).
I'm still taking the combined pill 3 weeks on from this as my surgeon thought it was a good idea. I still get pain from my surgery but I don't have as many problems with the pill as I did with the depo.
Take the pill but Deffo put forward for a gynae refferal... By the time you get seen, you will be able to understand your symptoms a bit more and what does/doesn't work for you.
If I can reassure you about the enlarged ovary, in my understanding, an ovary with many cysts on it or at least one large cyst will almost always be enlarged and swollen. I had a large endometrioma on one ovary and it made the ovary itself enormous. If the cysts are shrunken or removed it may take a couple of months for the ovary to go back to normal. It's very, very unlikely to be cancer if you are under 50.
Definitely take the pill but yes, it's a good idea to ask for a gynae referral. It might take a while at the moment.
Thank you that’s great I appreciate that a lot. Did they tell you from the ultrasound if it’s an endometrioma? Because the Dr thinks it could be endometriosis but with cysts.
Yes I will do. I appreciate it will take a while at the moment but I don’t mind. Thank you.
Endometriomas typically appear a certain way on ultrasound. They often have a uniform texture of "ground glass." I had an external ultrasound first which didn't give enough information, but I then had a transvaginal ultrasound, and it was clear from that. I don't have any experience of polycystic ovaries, though -- it may be different if you have several small cysts instead of one large one.
They may need to rule out cancer first, and If they do, it's no bad thing. It speeds up the process.
