I am 21 and in a relationship. I am sexually active and don't use condoms. I have been on birth control for 4 years (the same one) I usually miss my period or light spotting that last a day or two. In the beginning of the month and towards the end of last month, I had terrible cramps but no period, and I have been throwing up a lot and constantly nauseous. I have 4 weeks of my birth control in one pack, the second week just started and I got this really heavy blood, it isn't constant (like I can go without a tampon but when I pee and wipe there is so much blood) more like spotting but it has been about 7 days and not slowing down. I did miss a couple pills last month and only one this month but that has never been an issue for me. I recently started Zoloft this month for depression and not sure if that made my birth control less effective or causing this weird issue. Any idea of what this could be and what I should do? I know tests aren't always 100 percent. Thank You

I’ve missed my period the last two months and had same symptoms such as period pain and no period on birth control taken test they are negative, doctors usually wait till you miss 3 before referring you for tests to check what it could be.
If you ever miss a pill then you are risking pregnancy, so yes it’s possible you are pregnant though if you’re bleeding then it’s less likely. Your birth control may also be ineffective if you are sick or have diarrhoea. I think you might need to be more careful if you really don’t want to end up pregnant.
If you read the leaflet that comes with your depression medication, it should tell you if it has an effect on the effectiveness of your birth control, but your GP should also have warned you about this if it does.
As ever, go and see your GP if you are worried: they can check for pregnancy through a blood test if necessary.
