Bleeding on the depo injection after being on it for 2/3 years.

I have been on the depo for over 2 years now, coming up to 3 years in April. And I haven't ever had any bleeding or spotting or even any discharge in the 3 years, apart from when I was first given the depo and I was actually pregnant and I had a miscarriage 2 months after I got given the depo injection. I contacted the doctor in October after I started getting strange discharge but I just brushed it off but it's been getting worse over time, it started going a brown colour and then tonight it was red and all day when I have had a wee it has been the brown colour. I'm in a lot of pain, i went to the doctors on Monday and my GP said She wants to have a check so I have a doctors appointment on Monday to get a cervical check up as its not normal, does anyone know what could be the problem? I haven't been sexually active in over 2 years now, so pregnancy is defiantly ruled out! Please, if anyone knows what it might be, I am in a lot of pain. I got called back to the doctors because my prolactin levels was over 1000. Can anyone help? Thanks xx

Hello Becky,

I was like this after a long time on the depo it. I ended up having to have the injections more frequently as it was because they were wearing off quicker and my body was starting to have a period. The brown discharge is just old blood, they kept me on it for as long as they could because of the endomitriosis however, when it got down to about every 6 weeks they took me off it as it just isn't good for you to have them that often.

Prolactin levels can increase for so many different reasons one of which is stress and another is an under active thyroid. If it's the second it is easily treated with tablets.

Your doctor is doing the right thing by checking your cervix but it could be something as simple as your body has gotten use to it and it's time to find something else to use. They do advise that depo isn't used for more than 24 months in their leaflet although that maybe more of a guide.
