In most cases is stops periods, by thining the endometrial lining in the body - that is the endo cells in the uterus where they are meant to be and the endo cells outside the uterus where they are not supposed to be.

When the bleeding is stopped then you don't get the pains from fresh blood irritation each month, where trapped blood from endo lands on tissues it is not supposed to be in and causes inflamation and irritation which leads over time to th build up of scarring and adhesions which grow and grow and stick to nearby organs and tissue and can cause pain in their own right all the time, not just when endo is actively bleeding.

It is a long term menstrual controller, lasting up to 5 years, with no need to take tablets, and often no need to take pain killers either.

In many lades but not all, it can stop ovulation, preserving your egg supply for the future, preventing ovulationpains and mid cycle bleeding.

None of this is instantaneous. It takes 4-6 months for the build of hormones to reduce the thickness of the endo linings and also to build up a cervical mucus plug which holds the mirena in place and that cervical mucus aids the cervix to remain moisturised and protected from irritation caused by heavy bleeding which leads to cervical erosion which can be very sore and make having sex very painful. There are other causes of painful sex but erosion is one of them that most often happens with endo ladies who have nuisance heavy periods.

By stopping periods and perhaps ovulation too, then it stops the mood swings causing PMT (another bonus for many ladies).

It does not kill or cure endo found outside the uterus. It helps with the bleeding aspect, but it doesn't get rid of it.

It will however be very useful if you are prone to new endo spread caused by backflow periods along the fallopian tube(s) carrying endo cells to new locations and specifically threatening the area around the ovaries, which is future fertility is one of your aims is something to consider too.

Back flow blood heading the wrong way can irritate the ovarian fossa area and start adhesions growing there (with or without endo cells nesting there).

For endo ladies it is the least dose of hormones to control periods being only 20%of regular BC pill options. It doesn't suit all ladies but it is certainly well worth trying and if it works for you as it dos for millions of women then it is life changing...literally.
