Can adenomyosis be detected during laparoscopy?

I had a laparoscopy, no endo found but I was wondering about adenomyosis. This has never been mentioned to me but would they have picked it up during the laparoscopy? Nothing mentioned on my discharge note except that I have a 'small a/v uterus' - would the uterus be bulky with adeno?

Yes the uterus is often "bulky" and larger with adenomyosis.

I have adenomyosis which was diagnosed by an MRI scan. It can not be detected during laparoscopy but the surgeon may be suspicious if your uterus is larger then normal.

Here's a website about uterus position femalehealthmadesimple.com/...

it depends where you are in your cycle, a uterus can appear quite normal if the adeno is not currently active or indeed if the adeno cells are deep within the uterus muscle.

It can show up as lumpy, but doesn't always, and will be more likely to have a lumpy appearance if you have just had or are having a period and the bleeding is trapped in the muscle and has not yet dispersed.

It is not a reliable way to check, and it certainly cannot be discounted just because it wasn't seen to be lumpy. I believe the best way to get it diagnosed is an MRI scan of the uterus while you are on a period or just as it ends. That way any swelling within muscle tissue is more likely to be visible.

Definitely the next step to check for if no endo was found but all symptoms were pointing to endo prior to the lap op.

Hello,

The only way adeno can definately be confirmed is through biopsy after hysterectomy.

An mri in some ladies can be a very strong indicator it definately is, but you can have a negative mri result and still have adeno xx
