Hi, I think the op you are referring to is a laparoscopy. My understanding is that endometriosis still can't be positively diagnosed until the doctors have had a look inside. This will not make you infertile. However, having this disease can cause infertility problems.

My journey with endo started in about 1973, I had this op and I had a daughter in 1995.

Keep in touch, this site is very helpful, and lots of ladies have much more up to date info than me! x

In what way have you been told the op can make you infertile? you either are already or you are not, and any operation to look for signs of endo goes in through your belly button with a camera and if you don't want any particular procedures done then you can say so before the op. But if they do find endo - it could be absolutely anywhere in the pelvic region and may be no where near threatening your fertility. IF on the other hand endo is found growing on one ovary or tube it doesn't mean the other side is going to be just as badly affected.

Nor does it mean you don't have options.

A diagnostic lap op does not compromise your fertility, it may even help improve it, if adhesions are found and cut back, or endo lesions are removed successfully.

Hi Kelly

I'm sorry to hear that you are going through a very uncertain time at the moment because of endometriosis. In addition to the advice that the other message-boarders have posted, you may also find the information on laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis on the Endometriosis UK website useful, if you have not already seen it:

I hope this is helpful to you.

All the best,

Vanessa, Endometriosis UK

Thank you all for the info. I live in Germany currently and they said there r complications inc fertility etc! We r tryin for baby number 2 so am trying to hold out and pray we catch on fast then see how it goes after that but it's proving difficult

Hi Kelly, so sorry to hear about your uncertain diagnosis, we have all been there. I would like to happily inform you that the laporscopic surgery will not cause infertilty, you must have misunderstood your physician as it is actually the disease that causes infertility.

All the best to you x

In my personal experiance my diagnostic laparoscopy in may last year seems to have saved my fertility and im currently awaiting arrival of my son less than a year since .my surgeon separated my adhesions and although i was told at the time i had 50% reduced fertilitt due to a blocked fallopian tube they could not change (they performed a dye test during op) i believe 100% the excision of endometriosis due to the diagnostic surgery is the reason my fertility improved. However all surgerys have a level of risk ie infection perhaps this is what your physician is eluding to.
