Sudden stabbing pains

Hi!I was wondering if anyone else is struggling with this and maybe knows what causes it and something to help it.

My hip sometimes gets really sore which is normal for me but sometimes when I move even a little bit it sends a sudden kind of stabbing pain in my back which startles me and leaves as fast as it came. I have no time to prepare myself or know when it is coming. It is really painful and usually happens in my lower back.

Normally that only happens a few times but recently it was really often and lasted about a week, when usually it only happens really rarely or lasts about a day or two. My hip still gets really sore when standing ect. but fortunately the sudden stabbing pains are mostly gone!

I hope it's okay for me to post here even though I'm not from the UK :)

I get those, sudden sharp pains - there then gone, but I get them anywhere, and not in places which I'd anticipate - for example my upper arm when I'd been sitting comfy watching tv for an hour or so completely relaxed... no rhyme or rhythm lol. Someone told me they were simple muscle spasms and may be due to mineral absorption problems. I take 1/4 tablet of Nuun in a big glass of water daily and it helps with these and with my night time cramps too.

Pain is one of those things that is complicated in that where we feel the pain isn't necessarily where the stimulus triggering the nerve is happening.

Are you sure that it is actually the joint where the femur sits in the pelvic bone causing your hip pain, or could it be that something is going on in your lower back but you normally feel the pain in your hip only sometimes the nerve in your back does trigger to tell your brain about the pain?

We don't actually feel the pain in our body, our body sends signals to our brain and our brain has to intrepret where the stimulus in the body is, and sometimes that isn't all that clear to our brain!

I have Fibro as well as EDS so my life is basically all Pain .Just wondering if you more regularly have subluxations or have had a recent injury to the area.

From your description it sounds like a nerve impingement or sciatica to me which I get very often.

Does it ease with paracetamol or a heat pad?

A warm bath can also be soothing followed by some stretches within your comfort zone.

If it keeps happening it is worth speaking to your GP about it as you can get nerve medication like low dose Garbapentin in the short term to stop the twinges.

Doing some very gentle stretches on the bed and against the wall within your range of extension is one of the best ways to help the back pain and move the nerve away from its area of impingement. The odd twinges can happen for months after sciatica or other nerve issues as it takes time for nerves to heal and not give off the odd reaction to pressure. You can look up sciatic stretches on the internet , go for the simple gentle or somatic movements and only do a few repeats at a time building in one exercise move a day to be sure you don't make it feel worse with a move that may put pressure on the nerve. Build up from your comfort zone.

Have a think about your movement , if it happens more often when you bend forward or doing a particular thing hold off on doing that for a while until it is healed. Things like this get worse with the posture we all have a habit of sitting or walking in when we have pain so it's worth trying a bit of mindfulness for a while to make sure you sit or stand straight to allow the nerves to improve. If you need to sit with supportive cushions at your lower back and cushion your hips. Using Nordic walking sticks also help improve posture and reduce falls from subluxation when just walking about . Hope it improves soon , Bee
