Sedentary Hobbies Inspiration needed!

Hi everybody

Since I develop PVF I've had to quit exercising and find new hobbies. I've discovered my love of jigsaw again. What other sedentary hobbies have helped you keep your sanity since becoming ill? It would be good to hear for inspiration. What do you do as a family to get you laughing together?

I build and paint plastic model kits, mainly Sci-Fi but some planes and cars now and then. I also tinker about with vintage radio controlled monster trucks etc.

These are hobbies that I had as a child and are very familiar to me. I work at my own pace and do as much or as little as I can. Most days I don't have the concentration, eyesight ot dexterity and even on a good day I often drop parts or have to correct mistakes. I just having to be patient and return to it when I can.

I find my hobbies help me achieve something, particularly if I'm going through a rough patch where I'm mostly housebound. It's tricky for my partner though, as she can be resentful as she wishes I would do housework instead but most of the time I just don't have the stamina. I work part-time and have little capacity for anything else, I even have to use taxis because I can't manage public transport or to drive.

Hi Plen, since becoming ill I've taken up various hobbies that I can do sat in bed or on the sofa. I've taught myself how to crochet and knit (thanks to YouTube) and if I have a good enough day I will do my adult colouring books or preferably draw and paint with watercolours. When I'm feeling rubbish and not able to do much of anything then I use audio books and podcasts to get me through the day or YouTube videos depending on my mood.

You will find through trial and error what suits you, but you will definitely find plenty that you are interested in. I recommend low energy like knitting, embroidery or even your jigsaws to keep you occupied. That's the thing with this illness, despite the doggy days we are still the same people as before in terms of intelligence and still need that mental stimulation.

Try watching some YouTube videos of different art and crafts and see what sparks your interest.

Hope this helps anyways,

Rebecca.

Hiya... Here's a few suggestions for sitting down hobbies, learning something new is great for self esteem and depression too: - calligraphy, drawing, airbrushing, pastels, watercolour or any other arty things. Pyrography, glass etching and engraving. Scrapbooking, decoupage, card making.... Even paper making! Simple brain games like luminosity. All the needlework type hobbies - crochet, knitting, cross stitch, embroidery. Weaving, or making things on a loom. Reading is awesome on days when just being upright is impossible. Online scrabble or other games. Origami, wire sculpture, jewellery making.... Youtube is excellent for instruction, as well as new ideas. Good luck 😁
