kidney disease and emotions

i did not know that emonitial stress could affect the kidneys so greatly . I have the neighbor from hell in my SR community she is an alcoholic and sometimes uses meth and is Bi Polar . He seems to hate me for no reason and is focused on tying to get me evicted .She and 2other alcoholic friends make up stories and go to the manager. I have gotton 2 un- deserved lease Volations so far. It scares me as I have only been here 5 months and I am worried about being evicted and becoming homeless at age 68 . I only have SS to live on . I was so upset last Thursdaythat I cried and worried about being evicted for hours .I actually shut my kidneys down for 12 full hours !! It is now 6 days later and they are better but not right for sure . I am afraid I have done permanent damage to them . I am stage 3 A . I just hope with lots of pure filtered water and good diet I can get back on track. .What are anyone's thoughts ....

No, you did not shut your kidneys down by becoming stressed. Kidneys don't work that way. You probably got dehydrated and your kidneys were doing their job by NOT continuing to make a lot of urine.

BettysMom is right. You can't shut your kidneys down with stress. Stress is definitely not good for your kidneys however. If you are not drinking enough fluids during stress you won't have to "pee". Just remember to always drink enough. Your worst enemy is dehydration right now. It can raise your creatinine and cause damage.

To tell what was going on, you should have your renal labs done. Talk with your nephrologist and let him/her know what is going on. I would ask if you can have labs done now, and if the stress gets bad again, maybe they can be repeated. If nothing else, it can reassure you.

Best of luck in a difficult situation!

As kindly as I can express it I think you are making problems for yourself. Other posts by you in the past seem to show you are easily finding problems that don't exist (you didn't shut your kidneys down. Impossible). Or maybe a better way to say it is you overly exaggerate concerns, not just health, but even now thinking neighbors will get you evicted. You need to discuss these concerns (not just this post but a lot of others in the past) with your medical doctor. There are medications that can lessen your anxiety about issues that are what we call everyday stress issues that just a normal part of life. (example, lorazepam).

Perhaps, although I doubt it, these other people you mention don't like you for some reason, and somehow want you evicted. But look what you yourself wrote about them. You accuse them of meth, alcoholism, being Bipolar. Somehow all these type of people ended up living in your building?

You think for 6 days your kidneys are not right?? How can one tell if our kidneys are right or not?? What makes you think you "shut them down" (impossible).

Lastly you mention lease violations. If they are true, then you must have done something wrong. The "landlord" would not be able to just file them upon you if not true. If that is the case it is easy fight back, but I imagine they probably were true.

Honestly get yourself some help. Medical (not for your kidney but for your anxiety of over active imagination).

Depending upon where you live there are many, many landlord tenant courts or review boards that you can take your complaints to about your landlord (IF he filed false lease violations against you for example). BUT lets say everything you say is not just your imagination but true. Then rather than live in such a high stress situation, start to look now for someplace new to live.

No matter what you need some help with these concerns and your doctor is a good place to start. And he may even be able to set you up with someone to meet with and discuss your anxieties.

The old thinking was that emotions did not affect kidneys has been proven wrong .Newest research last few years shows that yes strong emotions can and do affect kidneys.

You may have best of intentions but really you have NO idea of what you speak about landlord and my crazy neighbors . No idea at all !!

This place has a very high percentage of alcoholics ,drug addicts, men on parole from prison who have guns they are not supposed to , people using street drugs (meth ) and so on .....

yes I am working on moving wish I could move tomorrow.

This is like living in hell here, you have no idea.

And no I do not want to take any medication from doctor to tranqulize myself , i do not want to be in la la land . That is nuts I want to move ,I am working on it .

You are clearly upset about your living environment and are working on moving. You disagree with my comments which is your prerogative of course. Others too have indicated they don't believe your kidneys shut down. Stress can impact the kidney, long term stress, but how? Because stress increases blood pressure is the primary reason. And OVER TIME high blood pressure can cause kidney damage. You are 3A which is MILD TO MODERATE kidney damage. But it would take long term "stress" (Bp) to cause such a serious problem such as shut down. But anyway, there is little more to say but I wonder the purpose of your post??? This is about CKD, not living environments. You believe your stressful living environment has caused recent and immediate kidney damage lasting now over 6 days. The only way to see if that is true is to see a doctor. This forum can't help you with your stressful living environment.

It is unfortunate that you feel all these drug users, alcoholics, the landlord, prison parolees, etc., are all spending their time and energy conspiring to torment you and get you evicted. Why they would all be so against you is not comprehensible.

Here are some ways, from kidney.org, to handle stress and its effect on your health. The most important is one I have previously suggested, which is to seek professional help:

Eat healthier foods

Limit salt and caffeine (especially if you have high blood pressure)

Limit sugar (especially if you have diabetes), and fats (especially if you are at risk for heart and blood vessel disease)

Set aside time to relax

Relaxation techniques (yoga, meditation, etc.)

Prayer

Talk to a friend, loved one, spiritual leader, or healthcare professional!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Write down your problems and think about the best solution for each of them. A list can help you evaluate and prioritize what issues need to be addressed.

Set realistic goals and expectations

Get enough sleep and maintain a regular sleep schedule

Maintain a positive attitude and outlook

Vacation

Regular exercise and more physical activity

I again urge you to seek professional help.

9 days now and kidneys are working fairly well... each day alittle better .

I never said everyone was conspiring against me .

1 neighbor and her her friend are .

These 2 women make this apt complex their whole life hardly ever leaving here , and love negative drama .They verbally attack me constantly when I go outside to the mailbox or to do laundry, or to take my little service dog outside ,or even to just walk to the car if they see me .And they see me fairly often as they seem to sit by the window and watch everything and everyone because they do not seem to have much else going on in their lives . This keeps me under constant stress .

Yes I do call it shutting kidneys down when they stop filtering for 12 hours and then take days to really begin working again.

I am an RN so I am not completely without knowledge of what I speak .

And yes I am very careful of diet and of corse as an RN teach others about kidney diet all the time . My BP is very good do to medication. Doctor always says " you have the BP of a teenager. "

I am working on an moving plan but as much as I wish, it will not be an over night thing .

Mean while I do have a life with my very active church and friends . And my favorite spot is to go to the beach and watch the little sailboats ,sea otters. seagulls and people . On the harbor side or waves , surfers and children playing in the sand on the ocean side . This is a healing spot where I spend time talking to God .

*** The lesson here is that constant prolonged stress and high level very intense stress can and does have great effect upon our kidneys so that myself and others here need to be very aware of this and make a plan to work toward to change the situation whatever that may be in our lives, negative living situation, negative relationship and so on... So that we are showing love and caring to ourselves .

I am ofcorse working on this plan of moving which gives me hope .

Both anxiety and the fight or flight system cause changes to the body that can lead to urinary difficulties. There is no treatment specifically for those difficulties, but it is possible to treat anxiety.

People with anxiety can experience a range of symptoms and side effects, even physical ones. More frequent symptoms include a pounding or rapid heartbeat, unexplained aches and pains, dizziness, and shortness of breath, but anxiety can also cause less common side effects like urinary retention.

A healthy bladder can hold about 2 cups of urine before it's considered full. It takes your body 9 to 10 hours to produce 2 cups of urine. That's about as long as you can wait and still be in the safe zone without the possibility of damaging your organs.

The best approach is to treat the cause of such anxiety and difficulties and not the resulting symptoms.

I'm glad you are looking for a different living situation. I will just say that anxiety/depression meds can greatly help if given correctly and can be changed if necessary.

Hi Seabreezegirl,

I have a thought about your situation. I do agree with suggestions about healthy living as RickHow indicated. But as a medical social worker, I would suggest communicating with the manager of your apartment. A face-to-face, calm conversation with him/her can be of value, and could allow you to clarify with them exactly what *their* position is if they are firm that *you* have been violating their housing rules.

Additionally there are Fair Housing regulations that protect you. A local agency should be able to help with giving you detailed information about your rights as a tenant, and the local and federal rules that govern housing in your area. No all landlords are good about following the rules. That's why Fair Housing agencies exist.

I wish you the best. Healing under stressful circumstances can be hard. Take care of yourself.
