Auryxia is a phosphate binder drug and is very expensive. Is there a generic drug for it. Or any other less expensive option?

Your reply will be appreciated.

Thanks

Sam

HI htpi1543, If you need a binder, then your phosphorous is too high. Sometimes, you can lower it with diet. Google high phosphorous foods and eliminated them from your diet. But if that doesn't work, then there are other binders out there.

No generic. I can see why you wish there was one. The lowest price I could find for it was 200 tablets for about $1200. It is usually used only for those on dialysis or who need more iron due to anemia. It is an iron based phosphate binder. There are many phosphate binders but I believe Auryxia and Velphoro are the only approved iron based binders. And the only two which are recommended for CKD treatment. Unfortunately not enough years have passed since the drug approval for there to be generics. The drug companies get a patent for their drug (some that last up to 20 years) and generics equivalents are not approved until the patent expires. And even then companies don't pursue making generics unless the drug is fairly commonly used. Talk to your doctor about the cost. Perhaps he would consider switching you to a calcium based phosphate binder which are less expensive. The company which makes the drug offers a program where they provide the drug free of charge, or small copay, if you have NO Insurance or can not afford the Medicare D copayment if you are on Medicare.
