Does Supplements Help

I was going through youtube and found Dr. Darren Schmidt, DC

with a video titled "Turn on Kidneys Like a Faucet". He named several supplements such as A-C Carbamide, KDIR , kidney bean juice etc. Does anyone have these or anything similar and what is the experience ?

HI Hazzaz,

If you have kidney disease, you should not take supplements without your doctor's approval. EVER. Supplements are unregulated drugs, even if they are "all natural" and can interact with other medications you are on or cause harm to the body. How do you know what is a good amount or dosage to take? You going to trust a website that does not know your whole situation and medical needs?

There is no cure for CKD. There is a way to slow the progression. Bottom line, it is with diet and healthy living and not popping some "miracle cure."

I went looking to find what I could on the products you mentioned. There was nothing but garbage and ads for these items which is a telling fact that it is junk. Usually, if there is any basis for credibility on products a reliable source will do a evidence based article on it. So...

please be careful before you take something based on a "snake oil" sales pitch.

A-C Carbamide is a diuretic and diuretics can be hard on the kidneys. consumerhealthdigest.com/wa...

Agree Bassetmommer. I would be too afraid to take any supplement not approved by my Doctor. It might do irreversible damage to my kidneys.

Blackie,

I think you need a new doctor. Why would a medical professional tell you they cannot talk to you about your medical condition. And...any doctor who is "prescribing" herbals is also concerning.

Why wait? Because taking the wrong thing can do irreparable damage.

He is a chiropractor and a Scientologist and he is an expert on kidneys? I think not!

These sort of people (Dr Quacks) on the internet are a threat to public health safety. Rely on proven medical science only when it comes to managing your kidney health. Watching YouTube videos and taking supplements is what caused my kidneys to get damaged in the first place!

Yeah, and taking NSAIDS prescribed by my doctor is what caused MY kidney damage in the first place.

Stop going to the doctors then, problem solved.

My very first appointment with the kidney doctor, almost the first words out of her mouth were "stop all supplements except a daily vitamin". Yes kidney beans are supposedly beneficial to your kidney (not because of their name). So, once in a while, once or twice a week, eat some kidney beans. But your doctor will, or should, do extensive blood work on you. This will indicate your own body, better than anyone on youtube. It will show if you are high or low in categories such as calcium, potassium, etc., etc., etc. Then your doctor will indicate to you what foods you might want to increase (for example if you need calcium to eat more dairy) or decrease. May I also suggest a thought. Let us suppose some person (doctor or not) says "here is the supplement that will greatly help your kidney and improve your CKD condition". If it honestly works, don't you think the medical community and organizations (kidney.org, etc.) would be aware of this "breakthrough" and be advising their patients to take it? Stick with your doctor, not the internet.

Let's be realistic. Doctors are in business to make money just like everybody else, and a cure for ckd will put them OUT of business. This is probably the main reason nephrologists don't show much concern until you're at stage 4, thinking about dialy$is time. That's when they see dollar signs, especially if they have a financial interest in a dialy$sis clinic as many do. And practically speaking, what company's gonna invest million$ doing double blind placebo controlled clinical studies when there's no money to be made off natural supplements? Answer: Nobody.

The flip side of this is the semi-regulated (at best) "health food" supplement industry that makes all kinds of unfounded claims and relies on anecdotal evidence. They're a big bubbling crock as well. So what's the poor frantic patient who's desperate for a cure supposed to do? Well, in my humble opinion, you have to do your OWN research...a TON of it, then run it by your nephrologist. Listen to what they say and very keenly observe how they say it. They will almost NEVER admit when they don't know the answer regarding a certain supplement or its affects on the kidneys. And if the doctor can't give an answer as to WHY a certain supplement is bad, either go to another nephrologist or DO MORE RESEARCH. And if you're not bright enough to interpret the results of clinical studies, statistics and all, DON'T TAKE SUPPLEMENTS...period.

You and I have different view points. That is what is good about forums, is people can read and study and learn of other peoples experiences. Then they can judge what they want to do for themselves. I believe you are right that some doctors and some supplement companies are in it for the money. But my belief is they are few. There are many, many pharma companies and Universities trying to find cures for diseases (cancer, kidney, heart, etc.). Do they do this to make money. Of course. What company would not want to find the cure for CKD or Cancer? They would make millions. But does this mean that as they discover advancements and perhaps cures, they would not pass the information on to all levels of the medical profession? Of course not. Think of St. Judes, of the recent advances in chemotherapy, the discovery of heart and kidney transplants, the new "targeted therapy" drugs for renal cancer, advances in radiation therapy, etc.

If you have a kidney doctor who does not show interest in you until stage 4, then run to another. I am 3b. My kidney doctor has tested my blood and urine on a frequent basis. And each time makes fine tweaks in my diet and medication depending on the results. I have "improved" my creatinine level from 1.9 to 1.22. When I needed more calcium she did it with diet, not a calcium supplement. For my being low in Vitamin D, she did advise a supplement. Is she going to cure me? NO! But somewhere out there, at this very moment people are working on cures. I don't care if they do it for money or pride. But I can't accept that when a major breakthrough, or improvement is found, that the medical community will keep it secret, so they can just get their patients to stage 4 to make more money. As far as supplements, I too believe that if one is found which results in great improvements, that the word would spread far and wide and become more common place. Just a in the past years fish oil, and others have now become accepted medically.

Time will tell.

I did my research. I take supplements, always have. I’ve been end stage for at least 4 years, who knows how many more. So for me, thinking outside the box helped me. I think it’s something everyone has to decide themselves. Prayers for you. God can do anything 😀

Maybe do a little research on COQ10...that's what I give my mom to try to help her kidneys.

what about nettle tea, or curcumin (turmeric), or apple cider vinegar? I have read that all of these are supplements that can help kidney function, but am afraid to try. Anybody know anything about these?

Sometimes you have to dig deep! I found out about two supplements I can't take because they don't play well with epilepsy. But I had a doc who didn't know that. He had also prescribed a med for my back pain. Until my Neuro NP found out, I had no idea it could very well send me into seizures. So I came into CKD ready to do research. I have.

Has anyone else caught DadviceTV.com on YouTube? He started at stage five. Interesting stuff, and he starts with a clear message that he is not a doctor. And he's not selling a book...but his last word is that you and I should listen to the docs and dieticians who know us. Just thought I'd share it.
