Chronic Kidney Disease

My mother is 80, and last year she had a GFR rate of 26, this year she had a blood test and the following day several of her medicines were stopped without a reason being given. She also hasn’t drank the recommended fluid amount every day either, only about 1.5ltr.

Lorsartan, Furosemide, Apixaban were all stopped.

Lansoprazole, Penicillin, Bisoprolol, Vitamin D were left to continue taking.

My question is, would the GFR increase slightly with those medicines stopped? And would increasing her fluid intake help at all?

Thank you for any replies, very much appreciated.

Hi Neeorg,

Welcome to our community. I think it is best if you can go with your mum to see her GP and discuss this. He/she knows her medical history and looking at the range of medicines she has been on suggests she has some problems with her heart and kidney function. As you probably know both systems work hand-in-glove to support each other which maintains homeostasis, balancing her fluids and electrolytes levels, removing waste products and maintaining blood pressure. It will be hard for an 80-year-old to drink a lot of fluid, but if she is no longer on diuretics (Furosemide) then the fluid will increase in her body, but, this may or may not be a good thing depending on her cardiac function. So you really need to speak to her doctor who has the knowledge and wider understanding of her particular needs.

Let us know how you get on.

Best wishes,

Yes, you definitely need to take your Mom back to her doctor and discuss these med changes with him. Before you go, think of questions you want to ask and write them down. Look up the medications that were stopped and what/why they were stopped. Furosemide is a water pill

Losartan is for high BP and is easy on your kidneys

Apixaban prevents blood clots, similar to warfarin.

These are 3 really important drugs. I would be calling that doctor ASAP if that were my Mom! Be her advocate and find out WHY these were stopped. If he doesn't give you a satisfactory answer, time to change doctors!

Keep us posted.

Thank you both for the replies.

We’ve spoke to the surgery and have to wait 3 weeks for an appointment, it’s a very busy surgery and over subscribed so going to try each morning for an appointment in the mean time.

Definitely need answers, it should be compulsory to give an explanation when stopping medication.

Once again thank you both.
